Hooks picked Princeton over Harvard, Yale, Brown, and Georgetown. He's ranked #242 for the Class of 2020 by Scout.com.

Looked at a couple of videos against smaller opponents. Big wide body, soft hands. Likes the left handed baby hook. Saw one jumper from the elbow with a nice stroke but nothing farther out.

Reminds me of Brendan Connolly but with more offense.

With Richmond and Gladson graduating next year, the Tigers obviously need a big and it seems unlikely that this year's freshmen player from South Jersey is the solution although you never know.

Watching video of the California kid shows some developed offensive moves and bulk but not a jumper or overly athletic but then again one only has to think of where Richmond was at the beginning of his Tiger career and where he will finish.

Zach Martini has committed to Princeton. He is a 6' 7" PF from Metuchen, NJ. He goes to Gill St. Bernard's School and had offers from Brown, Columbia, Yale, Vermont, American, Lafayette, Lehigh, Marist, Bryant, Loyola, Marist, Siena and Cal Poly.

Quite the stocky physique. Could play tight end for the football Tigers. Good footwork though, on the brief clip available on Verbal Commits.

Not a big fan of recruits that Mitch is securing other than obviously Jaelin and possibly the shooting guard from So. California. Some of the recruits just do not look quick enough or do not elevate.

I think that Mitch needs to recruit the atleticism let's say of Richmond Arirguzoh vs. the traditional Tiger big man, i.e. Will Gladson.

Do not think that the Tigers will be competing against Harvard, Yale and perhaps others unless the recruiting focus changes.

Hate to say it but not a big fan of what I am seeing on Youtube.

The recruiting class starting this fall is very athletic (Kellman, Kiszka, Evbuomwan, Langborg), but I agree that the three recruits for the 20-21 class might not be.

Zach Martini -

https://www.nj.com/highschoolsports/2019 /07/nj-loc...

- On July 8, the 6-7 power forward committed to Princeton over a handful of schools - including Brown, Columbia and Yale.

“Princeton was pretty new to my recruiting process, but they took it to a whole different level,” Martini said. "That started with head coach (Mitch) Henderson. The relationship I’ve built with him since April has been great. We talk a lot. In late June, he told me that they were ready to commit and were waiting on me. I took a week and sat on that, talked to my family and everyday the talk came back to Princeton. That’s where I wanted to be.”

During Martini’s talks with the head coach, Henderson compared him to Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green and expects him to play that same role on both ends of the floor for Princeton.

Luckily for Princeton, Green is a player that Martini has modeled his game after for years.

"Coach Henderson wants me to facilitate, run the floor, play the post and stretch the floor at times. On defense, he wants me to be a dog and have the mentality that nobody is going to score on me,” Martini said. “It’s Draymond’s dog mentality that I idolize about his game. He’s ruthless. He has no friends on the court.”

Last season was a breakout year for Martini. He transferred to Gill St. Bernard’s from Rutgers Prep prior to his junior season and increased his stats from 8.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game to 14.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. He also posted 20 double-doubles in 30 games - an increase from just two in 18 games his sophomore year. -

Wasn't there a Zach Martin (no "i") who was recruited to Princeton about 10-15 years ago? Highly touted. Don't think his career amounted to much.

It's a slow day.

Article about 2020 commit Mason Hooks, who at 6-10, 255 lbs is averaging 15 points and 14 rebounds on 62% shooting for a Harvard-Westlake (CA) team that's 17-2 and ranked #14 in the country by MaxPreps computer rankings. Hooks prides himself on being a traditional big and his ability to play inside. With his size, and the large gap that Aririguzoh will leave in the post, he could be pressed into action next season

From Fansided:

“Hooks, a 2020 three-star recruit, started this trend of choosing “smaller programs” over high-major — which does occur occasionally each year — by committing to Princeton on June 3. The 6’9″ center is a fantastic coup for Princeton as he is a big who can play in the low or high post. He is a fantastic passer, has the ability to score with either hand around the basket and an outstanding rebounder. Georgetown was also showing interest in the Harvard-Westlake High School product, who averaged 16.4 points, 12.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks last year.”

“started this trend”?????
What an ignorant statement.

Hooks is ranked #300 by 247. He may turn out to be an amazing Ivy player, but this ‘trend’ started long ago. Back in 2013 Zena Edosomwan, who went to same school as Hooks, eschewed far higher and more numerous offers to take a PG year at NMH just so he could attend Harvard.

Since then, there have been many players rated far above Hooks who chose the Ivies. If there is a ‘trend,’ it should be attributed to Amaker’s 2016 recruiting class that featured 4 roughly top 100 recruits - one of which is taller than Hooks (Baker) and another being the same size (Lewis).

The article is about 2020 commits who chose low major offers, and the full article is about how 3 recruits chose Stetson, Pacific, and Princeton over other high major offers. I think "started the trend" simply refers to the fact that Hooks was the first in that group of 3 to commit this summer.

Mason Hooks had a game-high 28 points tonight in Harvard-Westlake's 74-70 loss to Bishop Gorman, the #24 team in the country per Maxpreps' Xcellent 25 poll. Bishop Gorman's team has good size, including 4 star forward Mwani Wilkinson, ESPN's 86th ranked recruit in the 2020 class, but couldn't stop Hooks.

Hooks has led his Harvard-Westlake team to a 21-4 record and clinched a league championship in the always competitive Mission League in LA. In the January 27 state polls, Harvard-Westlake is listed in the watch list for California's Open Division, one of the toughest playoff brackets in the country for HS basketball (featuring national powerhouses like Mater Dei, Sierra Canyon, etc). If they're selected for the Open Division it would be awesome to see Hooks play against some of the top teams in the country in a playoff setting

Based on reports from his HS play against high competition, Hooks' offense looks like it's at a very high level for an incoming freshmen, and his size makes him a load for all teams. The transition is always tough for big men but all signs are pointing towards him having a great chance to contribute early in his career

https://twitter.com/Stewyakovic/status/12 259640683...

2020 commit Zach Martini's Gill St. Bernard's (NJ) team is currently ranked 8th in New Jersey, and Martini scored 12 points last night in a 14 point loss to a Sierra Canyon (CA) team that features 3 5-star recruits in addition to a TCU 2020 commit, a 7-3 junior, and most famously, LeBron and Dwyane Wade's sons Bronny and Zaire.

Luckily, since Sierra Canyon is so star studded, their games are pretty much all broadcast, so there's tons of footage available from their games, including this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVDsmyUEhQE

Martini appears to be a solid stretch 4 type. His shot looks smooth, but he also crashes the glass hard and had some nice moves against SC's 7-3 center. Good to see him perform pretty well against this level of competition.

Mason Hooks' Harvard-Westlake (CA) team claimed their 2nd straight Mission League championship on Friday night, with Hooks scoring 16 points in the win. They'll play in CA's open division, where a matchup with Sierra Canyon (and plenty of other nationally ranked teams) is possible

Mason Hooks' Harvard-Westlake (CA) team received the #6 seed in California's Open Division. They will play 3 games in pool play against 3rd seeded Rancho Christian (ranked 17th nationally and featuring ESPN #2 recruit Evan Mobley, a 7-0 USC commit), 2nd seeded Corona Centennial (ranked 4th nationally - Harvard-Westlake beat them by 13 earlier in the season, one of their 2 losses all year) and 7th seeded Mater Dei (ranked 19th nationally and featuring Kentucky commit PG Devin Askew and 4 star 2021 recruit 6-9 Wilhelm Breidenbach).

Will be very interesting to see how Mason Hooks performs against 3 top 20 teams in the country, 2 of whom have highly ranked post players themselves. He'll kick off his playoff season Friday night

Probably won’t be on ESPN+ unless they play Sierra Canyon after pool play (a replay of Zach Martini’s game against Sierra Canyon from last week is on ESPN+). Usually the CIF Open Division is broadcast somewhere so should be video, just not announced yet

Hooks' team went 1-2 in the Southern Section Open Division playoffs, with a win over Corona Centennial and losses to Rancho Christian and Mater Dei.

They received the #4 seed to the CIF State Open Division Southern Regional, and played #5 Corona Centennial again tonight and won. That sets up a Saturday game against top seeded Sierra Canyon (which features Bronny James, among others) that'll take place at Pepperdine University. Unclear if the game will be televised, but Sierra Canyon's popularity means there should be a lot of video from the game

Mason Hooks' HS career came to an end Saturday night as Harvard-Westlake fell to top seeded Sierra Canyon 75-65 with LeBron James and Drake both in attendance. Hooks had 18 points in the effort against Sierra Canyon's 7-3 260 pound center Harold Yu, who's a 3-star junior.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxy-A0UvlT4

Some video of the game, Hooks is #44 in black. His move to score at 6:34 reminds me a little of something AJ Brodeur would do

Thanks for the post.

Yu actually makes Hooks look small. And there must be more than a 15 lb. difference between them.

I've seen Yu listed anywhere between 260 and 300 pounds, so hard to say for sure but he definitely looks much bigger than Hooks. Putting a massive center like him with an already loaded team of 5 star wings and ball handlers is pretty unfair, but Harvard Westlake hung in and gave them a tough game

The guard from Ohio is Matt Allocco. I found some highlights on him from this past season. I read that he was 1st team All State. His team was very good by all accounts. He has really good size at 6'4 for the guard spot and is athletic. Looks like he can really handle it, pass it, and can create. I like what I see. Here are the highlights:

Thanks for those clips. Full disclosure: only watched about half.

He is listed as a point guard but I did not get much of a sense of his "handle", as they now call it.

Seems to like to get in the paint and go to the hoop, but that may change in college when his height is less of an advantage.

Assistant coach Skye Ettin, who is in charge of West Coast recruiting for the program, was named one of the 50 most impactful mid-major assistant coaches by Silver Waves Media.

Silver Waves Media is run by Ryan Silver, whose West Coast Elite AAU team and All Star Camps have been a part of the HS career of pretty much any Ivy player from California over the last few years.

Harvard assistant Brian Eskildsen, Penn's Nat Graham, Yale's Matt Kingsley were also named to the list. All 4 teams have had a lot of success recruiting California in recent years - Harvard I believe had 5 West Coast Elite players on the roster at one point
