Duquense obviously plays competitive basketball in the A-10 conference which has been challenging for Tiger teams in the past, i.e. VCU, St. Joe's etc. They basically get "3" rated recruits and they have a speial PG, Carry. They also get a fair number of transfers -- kids who played at big time schools but probably do not get a ton of minutes therefore they transfer to next level. They did lose one of their best two players from last year, who transferred to Oregon. They were 10-8 in league play and 19-13 overall last year with most players returning other than Williams, the Oregon transfer. They did get a 6'11" post-grad transfer who had success in their recent team trip to the Bahamas. Surprise that the spread is not greater especially with home court advantage. Carry and Llewellyn may well be going head to head -- Jaelin will have a big task in front of him. |

Carry is so well regarded, he'll be wearing Norm Nixon's "retired" #10. |

Over the past several years, Tigers have experienced issues in defending top flight PGs, out of conference. Llewellyn and possibly Johns will try to contain a very talented 6'1" pure PG. |

Llewellyn looks great so far besides the airballed 3. 1/2 from 3 and has a big dunk and a tough layup |

Desrosiers the first off the bench. Langborg the first frosh in the game, ahead of Ethan Wright. |

Very early but a good start. Llewellyn obviously has gifts. |

Up 5 going into halftime. Let off a little to let Duquesne take the lead, but good push at the end of the half to go into the locker room with a lead. Friberg played all 20 minutes in the half, shooting 4/6 from deep with 14 points. Aririguzoh has scored every time Duquesne hasn't doubled the post, 5/5 for 12 points and 6 rebounds, he looks as good as ever. Llewellyn 4/7 with 9 points, cooled off a little after a hot start |

Jaelin with 3 TOs in the first. Needs to better protect the rock. Also 0-2 from the line. Ugh. Johns with a quiet 4 assists. |

Not much to say besides just a brutal second half. Duquesne got really hot and the Tigers had no answer. Gotta bounce back quickly for another tough one against USF |

Glad to see Aririguzoh was still dominant. Still believe in Llewellyn but disappointed in his defense today. Feels like every non-conference game over the last five years gets away in the second half... |

Athleticism of good non-conference opponents have been a problem for Tiger teams over the past few years especially in the 2nd half. Unlike the men, the Tiger women got off to a slow start but then played like the Duquense men in the 2nd half. Bella played less than 30 minutes and had a slow start by finished with 22 pts - 8 rebounds. Very good defense and Littlefield looked much improved as to quickness. |

Lot of work to be done in non-conf. I'm looking for progress, not a gaudy record. Missed the game, but I see 17 TOs. With Cannady gone, I'm worried about our ability to deal with pressure. Other than Jaelin, I don't know if anyone has plus handles. |

Duquesne brought a lot of pressure, more than they'll see from most teams. Morales was in a lot as a second ballhandler, but that comes with other issues. |

Friberg looked good as a pick and pop shooter, and Kellman had some nice moments where his athleticism really showed in garbage time. Looked like Schwieger got hurt early, when he's healthy I think he's a guy the offense can go to. Not a whole lot of offense from the bench today, which will have to change |

That’s an ugly box score—1-10 from three in the second half, more turnovers than assists—yikes. |

Looked like Schwieger got hurt early I wondered why he disappeared. I was watching on my computer while otherwise occupied. Any idea what injury? Also, any word on Gladson? |

After watching a replay - a few observations. Duquense is a very solid A-10 team with a top flight PG who may be the best all around PG that the Tigers face this year. The Dukes had two very good big men with very different skill sets. They have a number of good role players and the team was very athletic and strong on the defensive end. Jaelin, Morales and Johns felt the pressure and did not respond well especially after the Dukes got over their slow start by exerting strong defensive pressure. I doubt that the Tigers will face the overall pressure exerted at this level in the IL. Arirguzoh and Friberg played well although Friberg cannot maintain that level of marksmanship. It hurt Schiegger being out but it certainly did not remotely change the outcome of the game. Johns played a horrible game. The Tigers do not have a back up center at this time which will cause significant issues down the road as Desrosiers does not have the height to be a backup Center. Perhaps, the upside is that the Tigers will face this level of competition only a few times this year but it does not mean that they will have a stellar record against lesser competition. Much work to do and not sure if it is possible although there is a recipe to be a better offensive team -- utilize Arirguzoh extensively on offensive end as he is simply very tough to stop and have Jaelin go to the hoop and skip the 3 pt shots and then dish off to Friberg or Schwiegger. Looks like it good be a very challenging season but plenty of time to improve. |
