I just saw that the great Heyward Dotson died last Friday. Had heard that he had been in failing health. He was the toughest player I had ever seen. What a remarkable man—brilliant Stuyvesant High grad, Rhodes scholar from Columbia, graduate of Columbia Law. I had heard that he was in failing health for years. Sad to realize that both Heyward and the great Jimmy Mac are both gone. |

Extensive and proper obit in Today’s NY Times. With his extraordinary gifts I could never quite understand why he never achieved greatness in his post-basketball life. |

Not everyone is cut out for success as a lawyer. It appears that Dotson was more of a scholar than a business person. And coming from Columbia Law and having worked at Shea & Gould myself, I can easily see how that can turn a person against the practice of law. It was a high pressure, pretty abusive atmosphere and many could not take it. But his accomplishments still stand up. |

I had not meant to demean him; his accomplishments certainly will stand the test of time. And he certainly had a mind of his own. |
