The news drought continues for whatever reason, but if you are willing to take the time to look at film on line there are several promising newcomers. There are no very highly touted freshman or sophomore recruits that I am aware of, but I specially like the high level athleticism of the two players from Texas as well as the two from North Carolina. In fact, all of the newcomers seem to show promise. At the very least, the new Lions have a greater chance to make their mark quickly at Columbia, than anyone who has come before.

Here's a 7/9/21 article from the WBB team:

Columbia Officially Welcomes 2021 Women’s Basketball Recruiting Class

https://gocolumbialions.com/news/2021/7/9/womens- b...

Noa Comesaña – Fr. – F – 6-1 – Barnard College – Vigo, Spain / I.E.S. de Beade

Griffith on Comesaña:
"Noa is a tough-nosed, athletic and hardworking player that has made a name for herself on the youth national scene in Spain. She is the top player reigning from her region. As a forward in our system, Noa will showcase her abilities to defend multiple positions and use her IQ to improve our systems on both ends of the floor."

Kitty Henderson – Fr. – G – 5-9 – Columbia College – North Curl Curl, Australia / St. Luke's Grammar School

Griffith on Henderson:
"Kitty is a relentless competitor and two-way playmaker that will fit seamlessly into our style of play. She is a proven winner that will add immediate depth to our backcourt. She has competed at the highest levels in her home country of Australia and has thrived in a fast-paced system similar to ours. She sees and thinks the game beyond her years."

Jaida Patrick – Jr. – G/F – 5-10 – Columbia College – West Haverstraw, N.Y. / Duke / Saddle River Day

Griffith on Patrick:
"Jaida embodies all the qualities of the type of player that we aim to recruit at Columbia. She has demonstrated her versatility, athleticism and toughness in the ACC in her first two years of college basketball. She is an explosive guard that will enhance our competitiveness on a daily basis. She can score at all three levels and is a menace on defense."

Thanks for posting the info on the three new Lady Lions. Unlike the men's basketball team, Columbia's Women's Basketball Team has many proven standout players. Two of the returning players, Sienna Durr and Abbey Hsu, are clearly pre-season first-team All-Ivy players and the talented Duke transfer, Jaida Patrick, clearly has the ability to make an immediate impact in the Ivy League. A fourth player, Kaaitlyn Davis, is another superb athlete, with huge potential. The Lady Lions only significant issue appears to be that there is no center on the roster. Columbia's tallest player is only 6'1" and most of its opponents have quality players who are two or three inches taller. However, the Columbia roster is loaded with several very athletic 6'1" players who can individually or as a group run their taller center counterparts into the ground while executing Coach Megan Griffith's exciting up-tempo offense. Finally, Griffith herself, is a wonderful coach in my opinion. She is upbeat and personable, and a very savvy game coach.

All five players look promising on film. Due to covid, they all have a decent shot at seeing immediate playing time. Ike Nweke and Maka Ellis are the only players on the Columba roster who have seen significant playing time for the Lions. Nweke is clearly the most important retuning player on the team. The stage is his. If Elis is healthy, he also can be considered a likely starter. Transfer, Patrick Harding appears to be an outstanding rebounder. Sophomore Liam Murphy, a local product from Staten Island, was a prolific scorer in high school and might develop into a standout front court player at Columbia. Columbia will have very nice size up front if the trio of Nweke, Harding and Murphy all start together. This is a true pre-season Mystery Team like no other in Columbia Basketball History.

Is Eddie Turner likely to start at PG? Nweke and Ellis should be an outstanding inside outside combo. Nweke at 6’7” and 240 is the strongest front court player in the league and has the potential to be a dominant front court player.

Given that Bryant transfer, Patrick Harding, was one of the best rebounders in the whole United States last year, I would expect him to start up front with Ike Nweke which would give Columbia two amazingly powerful big men. However, Harding's stats during in his first two seasons at Bryant, suggest that he did not average many very minutes or score very many points. So It will be interesting to see what strategy the Columbia coaching staff follows to maximize the talents of Nweke and Harding. Regarding the point guard position, I doubt anyone knows who is going to replace the incredible Mike Smith. Eddie Turner saw so little playing time two years ago that he cannot have much of an advantage over the other challengers. Freshman Geronimo de la Rosa is one of the many underclassman who are likely to challenge Turner. Both guards from North Carolina look impressive on film, but it is unclear whether they are point guards, shooting
guards or combos.
