Lo is getting some run with the German national team in the FIBA World Championship exhibition games. He came off the bench in today's game against Team USA. Games are on Fox Sports, if anyone's interested. |

Did anyone notice that all of the Columbia basketball players who are now in pro ball were recruited by the prior coaching staff led by Kyle Smith. What is that say about Coach Engles and his assistants. |

The answer is that Engles has several strengths-knows his Xs and Os, runs a clean program, seems like a genuinely nice guy, and will never embarrass the program. His weakness is that he does not have the dynamic personality or personal magnetism which is necessary to be a top end recruiter. |

Chet, I am baffled by your sudden effort to rationalize Engles horrific won-loss record as Columbia's head coach the last seven years by suddenly claiming "he seems like a genuinely nice guy and will never embarrass the program." Why the change of heart? I thought you considered winning important. |

I am not defending him—I am noting that his lack of success is caused by his inability to recruit high end talent. |

PS, Meg has a great email to the fan base—obviously written by her and not her staff. |

Chet, I respectfully disagree with your statement that "his lack of success is caused by his inability to recruit high end talent." Engles inherited From Coach Smith at least six players who are nowplaying pro ball and somehow recruited two three studs including Ike Nweke. Engles' coaching problem is much more basic, and is like a teacher who cannot mark a paper because he is unable to sharpen a pencil. |
