Seven seniors are listed on the Columbia Women Basketball Team's roster so in all likelihood the Lions will need four or five additional commitments in addition to Olivia Cooper and Emily MOntes

Yes, I agree that the team will need a reload between 23 recruits and the portal.

Columbia WBB picks up commitment from 2023 5’10 guard Riley Weiss from Long Island … prolific scorer … offers from Harvard, Penn & Princeton and many other mid majors … twin brother is also a 6-4 guard

Even if the competition is lousy, 40+ pts a game is nothing to sneeze.

The WBB equivalent of Grant Mullins?

I doubt her competition on Long Island was "lousy," but regardless she is clearly a terrific basketball player who is almost certain to make an immediate impact next year as Columbia will be graduating most of its top players/

No disrespect was intended to WBB on Long Island.

My perhaps too obscure reference was to the recruiting of Grant Mullins. When he was scoring 40 PPG against Canadian HS bball players, there were questions about whether the quality of the opposition inflated his numbers. Although the analogy was imperfect, that is what it reminded me of

Fair reference to Grant Mullins' high school basketball reference in Canada--hopefully Riley Weiss will be at least as successful as Grant was when he was at Columbia.

It looks like Coach Griffith is bringing in some highly talented players who will enable Columbia to compete for an Ivy League Championship not just this year, but many years beyond. In addition to all her other coaching skills, Coach Griffith is obviously an excellent recruiter.

Curious--Pennsylvania 6A player of the year with a 90 score from a ranking service attends Maryland, but transfers after scoring just 7 pts. the entire year. Lots of more experienced players ahead of her, but still--it sounds like a mismatch of coach and player.

Let's just hope that Griffith can unlock more of her potential....

Jaida Patrick had a fabulous career at Columbia after transferring from Duke. Now it's Ava Sciolla's turn. By the way, did you notice that another of our 2023 commits, Riley Weiss, was just selected as the Jewish female High School Player of the Year by the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Commack, Long Island. Dave Newmark, the legendary center on our legendary 1968-69 Basketball Team was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame this weekend.

Riley Weiss + Ava Sciolla along with the other recruits plus Hsu, Henderson, and Lauder= the dropoff may be even slighter than we anticipated...

Maybe there will be no "dropoff at all. I would keep in mind that Columbia had a great season despite all the many injuries to key players such as Eden Gainer, Nicole Steven, Perri Page and Noe Comesana. Towards the end of the season, Columbia had only one healthy back-up guard, Carly Rivera. I am not minimizing the loss of Jaida Patrick, Kaitlin Davis, Hannah Pratt and others, but Coach G is not going to let that happen again. At this time, I would say that biggest issue facing the Lions is the lack of proven depth up front behind Paige Lauder.

But who is Eden Gainer?

Eden Gainer was a promising all-state guard from West Virginia who played briefly for Columbia. I am uncertain what happened to her.

Columbia will be good next season – low chance of missing Ivy Madness - but there will be a drop-off and rebuild … could all happen by Ivy season – but some key intangibles:

Replacing a cornerstone class of seven seniors who transformed the program and catapulted the Lions to new heights is a challenge. The new recruits did not have to walk up hill in the snow to and from Levian to raise a banner:) Will they have the same hunger day 1? And while easier with an elongated schedule, Ivy weekends are a lot on freshman.

Second all the intangibles that do not show up in a box score are likely harder to replace than scoring and are the difference in tight games. Does the ball move a ½ second slower. Are the screens as good. All things seniors do better than they did as freshman. Hsu will still be dominant, but will she get the ball in as good as a scoring position, or will the double teams she receives be more problematic until her new cast grow into their new roles.

Looking at the box score – the Lions need to replace:

· 3719 minutes – 54% of time
· 1401 points – 53% of scoring
· 771 rebounds – 53% of boards
· Nearly 60% of assists and steals and over 70% of blocks

Only two players with over 400 minutes played last season return … 60% of the new starters and the remainder of the team have played just 947 minutes of college basketball last season for Columbia. Five income first years and a transfer will help. The question is how soon.

Thanks JDP for all your comments and information. Your statistical summaries are mind boggling and reflect your extraordinary knowledge of the Columbia Women's Basketball Program. I totally agree with all your comments and conclusions. One question I have for you is whether there is a limit on the number of players that can be on Columbia's roster, or for that matter, the roster of each Ivy League school. It also Another question is who are our five incoming first years. I know we have commitments from Weiss, Montes, Cooper and Tor. Is Kitty Henderson's younger sister the fifth incoming first year. Is our recruiting class finalized or will there be one more incoming player or transfer. Obviously, it would be great if Coach G could somehow add a skilled 6'3" plus player to the roster.

You are very kind. Ivy League Women’s Basketball is high level basketball and fun to watch across the league.

Scholarship schools can have 15 women’s scholarship players. The Ivies, with no scholarships, have always had more players … there was a rule on how many recruited athletes a school could have over a four-year period and how many could travel. I feel those rules may have been relaxed over COVID. Brown had 19 players. Yale had 13 with Emsbo (but due to injuries only 9 played in 20+ games).

Reality few teams get to 10 players playing in the majority of games in a season. But you have to have practice players, develop players and be prepared for injuries and players moving on from the school or basketball. 20 players feels like too many – 13 is likely the minimum (which is the men’s scholarship limit).

I did include Fliss Henderson in the 23 class – in confirming her year as 23, I see there may be a 2025 Aussie commit to Columbia in Chloe Dix. Can someone confirm?

https://www.allaussie.com.au/2023-eg-december-tour

Five & a transfer seem like a full recruiting class … It is late for a 23 coming out of high school as a school would have to accept a very late application – but I think still theoretically possible at least until end of June / start of the next academic year … more likely a transfer … I am sure many Ivy and non Ivies would like a skilled 6-3 player Still 400ish players in the portal!

Yes, all the available on line evidence suggests that Chloe Dix is coming to Columbia.

Australia seems to be Griffith's best resource for under the radar basketball recruits...
