I propose Bucknell move the Christy Mathewson Gates to another area, Perhaps behing Rooke Chapel but any ideas should be considered. I think the Christy Mathewson Gates and the football stadium are too close together, and the position and reverence of the Gates is protecting the football stadium and frankly, signals are getting crossed. The Christy Mathewson gates are everything, and football is nothing. Stop the association between the two and let football survive on its own. And let's rename the stadium too. I don't think its doing Bucknell football any good to be umbrellaed under the name Christy Mathewson, since the administration doesn't care about football. Stop with the mixed messages. |

Christy Mathewson was an All-American football player - and was best known at Bucknell for that sport - so I don't see any problem at all with associating his name with football.

I think the location is fine. Where we’re missing out is the failure to take advantage of a great sponsorship opportunity. Give the university enough money and you could add your name to the hallowed campus entryway. The (your name here) Christy Mathewson Memorial Gate has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? |
