. . .at Auburn, followed by Southern Mississippi or Samford in Game 2. Auburn only a 13 seed, so Penn obviously moved up the rankings some compared to what previous bracketologies were saying.

It’s not over, but Penn leads #13 (#1-seed) Auburn 6-3 top 11th thanks to an RBI double followed by 3 consecutive bunt hits, including 2 squeeze bunts.

Shame Owen Coady, one of their three excellent normal starters, is questionable with a bum shoulder, or the road to the Super Regional would be looking mighty clear right now. Nevertheless, as good a first day as you can ask for. Fear the pacifists!

Penn up 5-0 after 5 innings with a spot in the regional final on the line. Cole Zaffiro facing the minimum, allowing just one hit off the glove of SS Cole Palis, but a DP followed. He’s thrown just 47 pitches through 5 innings.

That was way more interesting than it should have been, but hey, when you're nominally the worst of four teams, you've got to get some luck here and there. 'Twill be interesting to see how exactly they cobble together the pitching tomorrow assuming that Coady is not available. Nevertheless, again, best you could ask for after two days; let's see if they can get it done now.

Should also be noted that Southern Mississippi dismissed Auburn in the afternoon (as someone on the Auburn board put it, the Road to Omaha turned into the Road to Opelika--a suburb of Auburn ), so they will play Samford tomorrow at 3 Eastern, with the winner coming right back to play us at 9 tomorrow evening. Game 2, if needed, will be on Monday. As I said, our pitching is going to be exciting tomorrow, so I'm rooting for 14-13 in fifteen innings in the elimination game.

These two games have exposed a couple of serious vulnerabilities in this team: 2nd line relief pitchers with control issues (that the coach sticks with too long) and some very jittery defense. Injuries have something to do with this, but their luck is going to run out of they do not clean it up. They are really going to really miss their #2 starter today when the ‘pen has to try and keep it close.

I wouldn't panic too much about the bullpen; Ozmer has been lights out almost all year, and Trop, Sarti, and Zeldin have all been pretty consistent. Sarti had a bad day yesterday, but that isn't typical. I will say that I've been surprised that Shoemaker hasn't gotten more appearances this year, since his stats when he has appeared have been in the same class as the last three; he does seem to have come in more often in the last few weeks, however, and he certainly saved their bacon yesterday. The problem is just that with all of them pitching in the first two games, you probably have to run someone out there who is more questionable and hope they have a good day.

The fielding has been a weakness in the past, but this year there seemed to have been improvement, as they ended up second in the league to Yale in fielding pct. and didn't have nearly as many meltdowns as they have in the past. Henseler has the tools to be a great 3B, but he doesn't execute consistently for whatever reason, which leads to games like yesterday, where he had an absolutely brilliant play early that made a tough chance look easy, but then botched a couple more later. He has ten errors this year, which works out to over 30 in an MLB-length season, so if he wants to progress, he's either got to raise that part of his game something fierce or else switch to a less demanding position. Calvin Brown just needs to concentrate and hold his glove closer to his face. Taylor's throw on the last play of the game looked funny; while it's hard to tell from the TV angle, I wonder whether the umpire got in the way a bit. I will also say that I think he rushed it because the runner was faster than he thought; even a good throw would still have been a bang-bang play.

How about a 1 1/2 to 2-hour weather delay about 45 minutes into the Samford-Southern Mississippi game? We'll see whether the starting pitchers can continue...

I thought Southern Mississippi (#13 RPI, #17 Baseball America poll, #19 coaches poll) was the best team in the Regional, so I'm really pulling for Samford this afternoon. Auburn is #20, #22 and unranked, respectively.

Do they expect pitchers arms to be made of rubber? Tonight and tomorrow, if necessary, are not going to be pretty from a pitching perspective.

Yeah, the final loser's bracket game should be the only game on Sunday, and then the championship game or games should both be on Monday. The team making the final through the winner's bracket already has a big enough advantage; the other team should at least have the entire night to recover.

And that's followed up by another bad fielding moment, as Werchan throws the ball away trying to get the batter stretching out a double, and then Miller can't make a good throw to get him at third, either.

So, having gotten crushed and now in an elimination game, does Penn have another pitcher who can shut down a good hitting team? It's a bit strange how they compress the games here after a season in which they play a bunch of games on a weekend and maybe one other during the week.

I think we get the answer today.

They saved Ozmer and Zedlin for this ‘bullpen’ game. Shoemaker will be available and I would not rule out a ‘cameo’ from Dromboski.

No idea what the state of the USM staff is after this weekend though.

I bet the over at 12.5. Penn is plus 165 as of now.

Well, not that close. They would have needed to take 2 of 3 from Tennessee to get to Omaha. (I think.)

Still, a great effort. Turns out college baseball can be kinda fun to watch! I'll be keeping an eye on these guys going forward.

It was a really nice season for these guys.

Maybe this is obvious but the Penn baseball team has a real online personality. Compare this with the Penn basketball team of which I can only describe as devoid of an interesting online presence.

NYCHoops mentioned a lot of things in his recent post. One of several was that he senses that our staff doesn’t really understand the importance of some modern day means of creating awareness and interest among potential hs basketball players. I’m not saying our staff are duds, but in terms of a social media footprint, they are not very impressive, at least from my perspective.

My sense of things is that Donahue is good at some things and not as much at others. He runs a better and cleaner program structure than either of his 2 predecessors. He is missing something in recruiting. His player development seems decent. His game coaching is a mixed story. His innovation appears so-so.

Steve's winning Cornell teams were a perfect confluence of some lucky recruiting, player development, and players whose abilities highlighted Steve's strongest game strategies. The problem is that nothing stays the same in sports. The league is recruiting better overall, the whole NCAA is changing (NIL, transfers, etc.), and his strategies are well-known and more broadly practiced. We also have not had good timing of players who fit his approach well.

The part that is more difficult to puzzle out is that for his first few years, I actually thought his game coaching was good. Our teams always seemed purposeful and focused, and never gave up playing hard. He was slowly improving as a defensive coach. His progress seems to have stalled. Our defense is terrible, and our offense doesn't seem to fit our personnel (or vice-versa).

The coach has to own all of this, and never rest on their laurels in even a single category. The coaches need to be a continuously learning and quickly adapting. In the old days, coaches like Boeheim, Knight, and Smith could just run teams the way they liked. Every year looked like the last decade. Now, even Duke, Kentucky, and other power teams have had to adapt quickly to the new landscape. I do question whether he is up to that task and succeeding in the Gen Z player era.

Either way, I respect Donahue a lot and our program overall. I am not shouting for his head. If he is leading our team, we need a few lucky strikes in recruiting very talented Donahue-type players. I don't think he will hit every cylinder in meeting the new world of college basketball without a bit of luck. As NYCHoops said, some others are working harder and smarter. I'm OK with that as long as our team stays motivated and they represent us as well as have.
