Duquesne is being pretty aggressive on D, plenty of ball pressure. 7-4 start for the Tigers is good. Dukes are forcing up shots. |

15-15 as Duquesne made a couple of tough shots. Tigers keeping their composure under defensive pressure, but treys will be hard to find. |

Lee with the great drive off quick passes after Peters penetrated and kicked. 24-17 with 7:56 left and a FT coming. Fouls mounting for the Dukes. |

Princeton 25-17 after going on a 10-2 run, with Duquesne finally starting to miss some of their very tough shots. I like the movement on both ends of the court so far. |

Up 37-31 after a buzzer-beating trey from Duquesne. Allocco and Martini each have two fouls, which isn’t great, but if they don’t get worn down the Tigers ought to be able to win the second half. |

52-49 with 11+ to go. Huggins scores the first bench points of the game off a nice feed from Lee. This is going to be a test for the Tigers to play a really good team on its home court and keep its foot on the pedal for the last 10 minutes of the game. They are fun to watch! |

Not pretty down the stretch but they got the W and never gave an inch against a tough opponent. Off game for Caden, Lee took over at several points and Allocco was Mr Dependable. Still no bench contributions although I though Huggins was very active on D and not a liability when he was on the floor. |

I really like how they play generally, but I would be more enthusiastic about season prospects if games were 30 or maybe 35 minutes long. Maybe the bench will develop quickly. The coaches certainly have shown the track record to do that. |

Another gritty, resilient road win! This was a good Duquesne team playing at home and they were definitely ready for us, strategically and emotionally. They screamed with joy when they baited us into a foul/TO. Duquesne's halfcourt pressure and athleticism really bothered us - and forced some horrible TOs near the end - but the guys never lost their cool and always had an answer. Allocco hit several amazing shots and Pierce came up with the big stop even after the Dukes played him tough all night. Lee plays like a senior now; he's just that smooth. Peters is really showing me something defensively - what a bulldog. And Martini does the dirty work on defense and then makes a big bucket when you need it. This was the best kind of early season game - a win but a lot to learn from too. |

I really expected to lose a tight game going in. So, I kept pinching myself when we would get up 9. But, predictably, the Dukes would come back within 3, then 1, and somehow we would hang on. We need more bench. But, great game defensively by both squads. Caden can expect tough coverage from now on. But, with five guys who can shoot, this is a team that could go places. Please, no injuries! GO TIGERS, |

The Weisz/Cook/Cannady/Bell/S tephens/Miller team, the teams of the Henderson/Goodrich era…you never know who was going to be today’s hero. And so it is with this team. It adds a little to the Fun Quotient from the fan POV, and it makes it that much harder to key on our guys. Stop Allocco, and Pierce makes you pay. Stop Pierce, and Lee comes up big. What’s next at Monmouth? Martini? Allocco? Does Blake Peters go Stephen Curry on us? Maybe Jack Scott breaks out???? Can’t wait to find out. |

Martini does not show up often on the stat sheet but he has been very valuable in the early going. He is always assigned a guy bigger than he is. Plays tough d, hits the occasional shot and helps on the boards. But for Pierce's genius he might have more rebounds. And he plays 30+ minutes. |

Lee keeps showing new stuff to impress me - last night it was the play where he drove, got in the air, looked off the defender to the corner and then hit Higgins on the roll. This team is really fun. I have 35-25 in 18 minutes with the five starters last night, 35-42 in 22 other minutes. Offense-defense subs skew those numbers a bit but not hugely. |

I watched about half the game last night and then the end of the game this morning. As the announcers joked, I think Duquesne does in fact practice fouling. Very subtle. This team has been unique in that they have started the season running the offense in a very comfortable fashion. There is no "feeling out" over their identity. This is a bit of a surprise, given the absence of Tosan. I am starting to have flashbacks to teams of earlier eras; great difficulty finding a shot as the 24-second clock expires. There is no one able to break down the defense off the dribble and create a good shot. Allocco comes the closest. This is where they miss Tosan the most. |

So obviously, there's a lot of basketball left to be played this non-con, let alone this season. However... History suggests that the NCAA selection committee won't recognize you as a team worthy of an at-large until the year after you do something really good (e.g., various mid-major snubs a la Liberty last year). This was numerically the most difficult non-con game left on Princeton's schedule. In its remaining non-con games, KenPom favors Princeton in all but one (@St Joe) and favors them by 2/3 chance to win or better in all but two more (@ODU, @Delaware). I'm just saying, if Princeton doesn't screw anything up, doesn't have any injuries, and manages to win at least two of those three close ones, things start to look interesting for the two-bid Ivy dream. (Princeton's biggest resume problem is that they'll only have one Quad 1 game this year - @Yale - unless we get a surprising turnaround from Rutgers or Duquesne improves.) |

Xaivian Lee has the potential to create his own shot both off the dribble and from mid-range but I agree he is not as consistent a threat as Allocco.

Lee does not elevate much on his jumper, and the trajectory is low and flat; when closely guarded difficult to get it off. I was hoping for more from Scott. Can we get Perkins from Penn? |

Lee’s jumpers are usually of the jump back variety, which provides the clearance for his flat trajectory shots and relative lack of elevation. His move to the basket is so quick that defenders have to weigh carefully how close to guard him. Nice combination of weapons that has made him very effective so far this season. Three very nice wins that completely surprised me. Glad I bought season tix this year! |

There is a certain charm to rapid acceleration and outright dribbling speed going downhill to the rim, which Lee has in spades. The quick pull-up off of that threat is a nice counter. The offense has to move help defenders a step or two out of position to make that toolset effective, but as long as Lee has good judgment about when to go it is a big net positive for the team's scoring potential. |
