https://www.inquirer.com/college-sports/big-5- clas... Penn has no chance of a top seed. If Joe's beats Nova tonight, Penn will play the loser of Temple v. LaSalle for 3rd place. If Nova wins, Penn will play Drexel for last place, despite having beaten Nova. Crappy system. |

Yeah not a fan of the system, though I appreciate them trying something to bring some juice back to the Big 5. I think Nova wins tonight though they've been rolling through much better teams than Joes since we beat them. |

I think they should have played a 3rd game against one in the other group to prevent what will be almost yearly "ties". It would cut one of the games out---they didn't need to limit the games to 3 out of a potential 5 against the Big Six. A tiebreaker based on ranking is absurd. |

While I am not particularly happy with the new format, especially playing at the Wells Fargo Center (let's see how many tickets they sell), under your proposal, each team would (I assume) play four games. That's what we had before and obviously was not working from a scheduling point of view. I'd also like to see a better way to seed this thing - what ideas do you have along those lines? |

Remember, they added another team. For Penn, we lost the ability to schedule 3 games against LaSalle, Temple and Drexel. The reasons given for the change were not that Villanova couldn't play 4 games anymore (that was Rollie's thing, but the Big East is not that large a conference), but that no one cared. I don't think any more people are caring now. But obviously, if we keep this format, points for and against in your group is much better than ranking, which has nothing to do with the results. We would be -5 in the 2 games, and that would mean if Villanova won tonight by more than 12 (they currently are -4 and St Joe's +8), they would get the first seed, and if they won by less than 12, the 2nd seed. |

It would be nice to see Penn schedule some teams from the other pod in future years even if it means it is possible they will play a team twice. Playing La Salle is much better for them than playing the 2 D3 games on their schedule. |

St. Joes every impressive. Cruising over Villanova even without their big guy. Lasalle and Temple nip and tuck in the second half. I guess Penn gets the loser?? I suppose they could go to point differential to break ties. That's what the NBA has done with their in season tournament. Folks down here in Orlando are not too happy with that! |

I imagine the NOVA fans and message board must be apoplectic right now and NOT loving the new Big 5. |

Wow, I just saw the result of the La Salle Temple game, wild! I guess Temple vs. St. Joes for championship and us versus La Salle for 3rd place game. The irony right now is that Drexel is currently 127 in KP ratings, and La Salle is 203. A winnable game against La Salle at the Big 5 tournament, so let's hope the guys can show out. |

There are an awful lot of NCAA teams with bad losses already. It's not a positive, but it's not a death sentence for the team. They still have some time to learn and develop within the season, as shown by the 2018-2019 Foreman team. |

College basketball has been trending towards parity for a long time. First with players leaving early and now with the transfer portal. For a while there was an Ivy advantage in that system with mostly 4-year players, though the trend of Ivy senior transfers to bigger programs is probably limiting that advantage. |

First of all, it's not as if the Hawks beat our guys easily, but it was easy to see that they have some real talent and are well-coached. What I find remarkable about last night is how they best Nova handily without their big center who surely would have helped them in that matchup. |

Billy Lange was a GREAT hire by Joe's. Not only is he a local guy who was a coach's son (Bishop Eustace), he has had success at every place he's been, from assistant at Textile under the great Herb Magee and Nova to Jay Wright and head coaching spots at Merchant Marine and Navy. That is almost the perfect resume for a mid-major looking to turn a declining program around. |

I wish we knew of any programs that needed a local guy to turn around a mid-major.

I think that person is very happy where he is. I have to believe that other mid-major (or higher) programs have contacted him. He has pretty good job security, lives in a relatively low-cost area and in a beautiful setting. He obviously likes the life style for his family. |

I thought St. Joe's looked very impressive. That 3-2 zone was legit, for one thing. And their two talented scorers played smart, efficient basketball. |

While I agree with you that it’s a crappy system, Penn was not going to play Drexel in the fifth place game Saturday unless both Villanova and LaSalle won Wednesday night. Since St. Joe’s and LaSalle are already scheduled to play twice during the season, it was predetermined they would not face each other in the triple header unless it was for first place. With LaSalle finishing second in their pod, St. Joe’s would not have played them in the third place game.

Thanks, I was unaware of that wrinkle. I am just hoping that in future years, we are not prevented from playing the non-pod Big Five teams outside of the tournament --the scheduling of 2 D-3 games is unacceptable. |

Langel. Who is from NJ and would not mind coming home to his alma mater with better resources, better academics (no slight on Colgate), and better facilities (the Palestra!). |
