I have an outsider's general question about baseball: Why do they play so many games?

Specifically, I was surprised to see that Bucknell would be playing two days of double-headers at Navy. One double-header seems like plenty, especially considering the general desire to minimize time away from campus.

I can't give an exact answer as to the rationale, but the format for many years has been to play doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday. One reason is that playing four games over a weekend reduces the chance of a team dominating the league by merely having two or three dominant pitchers. Fwiw, baseball has less time away from the classroom than does basketball since they don't have any weekday overnight trips during the week.
