Oh come on---they played no differently than Pat Riley's teams. It was a different era where there was far more physical contact and the game involved a degree of intimidation. Detroit was not alone and they had a great team that deserves kudos for its success at the time.
I didn't like Riley and those Knicks, either, but this was different and extended far beyond playing the actual game. In the 4th quarter of that game, when it was clear the Pistons were going to get swept at home, the crowd started chanting "Go LA (who would be the Bulls first Finals victims)" and Isiah and crew on the bench loved whooping it up. When MJ was interviewed on the court right after the game by Ahmad, he was showered with boos by the Palace crowd.
All of that proceeded about 3 or 4 technical fouls being called on the Pistons, the most egregious one being Scottie Pippen getting clotheslined by Rodman right into Laimbeer, who violently slammed him into the crowd. The entire Bulls bench got up and was headed towards the Detroit bench before calmer heads prevailed.
Fast forward to the Bulls winning championship #1. The mobs coming out of the bars on Division Street were shouting one thing, and one thing only: De-troit Sucks. The enmity was real
Thankfully, that was the last time Detroit was ever heard from again during MJ's time. I think they went something like a decade or so before they next beat the Bulls in any game.
