I heard from a guy who knows one of the assistant coaches that every player on the team knows exactly what shots he is, and is not, allowed to take, and it's totally different for every player. One of the main ways guys play themselves into or out of the rotation is by respecting this rule.
I suspect that they also know exactly what shots they want to allow and deny for opposing players.
