Men's Basketball Opens Italian Tour With Stunning 82-80 Loss
May 17, 2018
ROME, Italy – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team was up by 14 on U.S. Tiber Roma more than midway through the fourth quarter in its first game during its Italian tour, but were stunned by a 21-2 Tiber run that catapulted the Italian club team to an 82-80 win.

Penn led 75-61 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, but were unable to stop Tiber's offensive onslaught down the stretch and could not score on offense itself. The combination allowed the Italian hosts to take an 82-77 lead before Antonio Woods capped off a team-high 19-point night with a three-pointer at the buzzer that set the final score.

Tiber's leading scorer was Andrea Valentini, who scored 32 points in the game, while Filippo Bertoldo had 21 and Marco Reali added 10.

Notes
*Penn shot out to an 11-0 lead to start the game and it was 14-1 shortly after that, but Tiber was able to come back and took a 30-29 lead by the midway point of the second quarter.

*Penn shot 10-of-38 on three-pointers, thanks mostly to a late surge when Penn turned a 49-44 deficit into a 75-61 lead. Woods was 4-of-5 beyond the arc on the night, while the rest of the team was 6-of 33.

*Penn had 17 assists but committed 20 turnovers.

*Penn was 18-of-25 at the foul line on Thursday.

*All 14 Penn players who dressed on Thursday played in the game.

*Wood was the only Penn player to score in double figures. Four other players finished with nine points—Jake Silpe, Jakub Mijakowski, Jarrod Simmons and Jelani Williams—while Devon Goodman and AJ Brodeur had eight each.

*Brodeur also had five assists, while Silpe and Williams finished with four each.

*Jackson Donahue led Penn with five rebounds, and then amazingly eight different players had four boards. Overall, Tiber outrebounded the Quakers 47-45.

*Williams was playing for Penn for the first time since arriving on campus; he missed the regular season to injury. He ended up playing nearly 24 minutes.

*The only two not dressing on this trip are sophomore Ryan Betley and freshman Mark Jackson. Jackson is injured, while Betley was prescribed a period of rest after the regular season and this trip happens to fall in that window.
