Fortunately for Columbia, Smith has been around the entire season, seen how well they did without him and realized how he can use his skills to push them to the top half of the league. With Hicks, SD had to talk to him as the new coach and ask the senior to trust the process in his last year of eligibility.
I would think that Smith will be able to adapt to the team for his senior year and then move on to a higher ranked conference for a grad transfer year. With it being his senior year, Hicks didn't have that same set of circumstances and decided to sit out the year before moving on to Louisville. An understandable decision and one that was probably in the best of both parties.
