Some initalghts n ‘s loss:
St Mary’s is a good, senior laden team with players who have many calendar years on Harvard. Fundamentally sound. They’ll be a handful for anyone.
Tale of 2 halves (again). Really felt like there was no purpose to the offensive sets in the first half, while there was a real effort in the second half to get Lewis the ball and to let Towns create. In turn, that freed up Aiken to do his thing. Of course it helped that the defense created a big part of the offense during the 12 point run to start the second half. A less sound team might have seen nearly all of their 26 point lead disappear.
Negatives: still lots of poor shot selection. Too many possessions given away that way. Limited offensive production from Johnson & Bassey. Hopefully Corey will get back in sync. Too many easy baskets for St. Mary’s. Again, part of that is their experience. Limited production off the bench. Baker is talented but seems lost out there. I keep hoping he’ll be used at the high post and pass to wings or down inside to Lewis.
Positives: Lewis and Towns were able to play effectively without foul trouble. That’s a big change from last year. 8 turnovers is a very positive sign. If that number stays in that range, the offensive production will be solid. We have 3 great weapons on offense and a fourth when you add in Corey. We have to identify which of the 3 options fits and aggressively attack.
Things to watch Friday and Sunday: Need 11sr half intensity on both ends of the floor. Who will contribute off the bench? The 2 freshman show promise, but I still think Perez would be invaluable. Obviously, something is amiss there that I don’t know about.
