A lot of it has to do with the program and the coaching. The bottom four teams really underestimate what it requires to attract and retain talent. Academically these kids want that Ivy League education. Athletically they want to play at big time program.

Harvard has done an excellent job of offering both. Scheduling matters too. Top talent wants to play against top talent. They want to travel and play in bigger tournaments. Princeton has stepped up their schedule in recent years, playing in Hawaii.

When your former AAU team played a better travel schedule than your college team you're going to have trouble retaining kids.
