In response to MrPhillie
Wasn’t Martelli a jerk in the O’Brien situation?
Yes. He apparently was miffed because O'Brien decided to graduate and transfer - even though Martelli had recruited a couple young bigs who had taken all of TOB's minutes. Martelli also had brought in a transfer center who figured to play big minutes that year. Thus O'Brien went from a starter his first year of eligibility at SJU (2009-10) to a benchwarmer who rarely played the next year(2010-11).
Martelli then gave O'Brien permission to talk to potential landing spots following the 2011 season, and he gave those schools permission to talk to O'Brien. Thus all parties believed there would be no issue in getting the necessary waiver signed by Martelli to allow TOB to play. But after O'Brien signed with UAB to enter one of their graduate programs, suddenly Martelli refused to sign the waiver. He got a lot of bad press for his actions, but he refused to do the right thing. Thus O'Brien's last year of eligibility was wasted practicing and sitting on the bench, unable to play in a game.
