Prior to 1980, many of the top Bison athletes competed in more than one sport. It was common, for example, for the baseball team to have many players who also played football, basketball, or soccer. Two examples:

- Randy Ruger, who was a very good football safety, still holds the Bison records for batting average in a season (.494), slugging pct in a season (.883) and on-base pct (.554).

- Gene Luccarelli, who was a very good baseball center fielder in 1969-71, still holds the career record in football for interceptions and return yardage.

One other multi-sport name is Ed Farver, who not only was a multi-year starter at PG in the late 60's, but also made 1st team college All-America as a lax midfielder.
