And once again McNally misses a three that would have won it.

For some reason GameCast is just not happening for me tonight, but from the regular scoreboard, Harvard is now up 5 with 1:55 to go in OT.

How much anguish can Columbia take? A couple bounces and Columbia goes 10-4 instead of 4-10. In the Pomeroy sense of the word, this must be the most "unlucky" Ivy team in history.

Well, I'd like to think they softened Harvard up for Cornell. If the Big Red can get the upset tomorrow night, Columbia gets an assist.
And I'll stop calling Dr. V "Evil" Dr. V. (At least for a little while).

Just back from the game. It was a credible loss, and the strategy that got us into OT was the one I've been wondering about since last summer: why not play Osetowski and Cisco together? It worked: when Harvard was up 6, and getting dunks inside, they gave us better defense, and we almost pulled it off. Cisco still hesitates sometimes when he should go up for the shot, but Rosenberg and Osetowski are continuing to develop, and next year, I expect we'll take at least one game from Harvard.

very encouraging defeat, we played hard, were scrappy on defense which yielded turnovers, we shot decently from 3, and in many cases strategically outsmarted a more talented and athletic Harvard team. Barbour continued to be an anchor, 100% dependable to give his all and perform when it mattered. Rosenberg finally translated his strong athleticism into points and good defense. Osetkowski, despite being an awkward ball handler, showed good strength and basketball IQ to know how to get a basket from inside or shoot 3 when left free. Cisco was on the receiving end of bad foul calls, H also attempted to foul him out all game, but he was resilien and focused, people are scared of Cisco and with reason. H did not play a weak game, Kyle Casey performed and owned us occasionally, Keith wright was solid along with the guards,
I don't care about the odds, without agho we have a legitimate shot at the title next year, with Agho I put us as favorites.

Wow. They better learn how to win first.

With Agho and Frankoski we would have been in the mix. We are very, very close.

Gutsy effort by the Lions behind a packed gymnasium filled with spirited Columbia fans. Barbour just keeps coming at you, driving teams like Harvard crazy with his relentless effort. The Crimson put three defenders on him whenever he went to the basket and the guy still scored over 20 points. It took the refs 3/4 of the game before they started appreciating Barbour, and called a couple of fouls on Harvard. Tommy is improving slightly as a game coach, but with the talent he has on this team, it's absurd that they are not winning every game by at least 20 points. We tried to help our Penn friends and may have tired out Harvard sufficiently that Cornell can knock them off this evening in Ithaca. Good luck to Cornell!

CU will have excellent talent next year. As Amaker has shown, you still have to win the big games before you reach the promised land. Columbia will have to take its game to another level to win a title even with the guys coming back. (Hint--It really does help to challenge your team in the pre-Ivy season).

With two or three exceptions I thought that our pre-season schedule, while not as daunting as those of Penn etc., wasn't too bad. But Swarthmore? In any event, I hope that Agho's recuperation is coming along. As I recall from a situation at Harvard a few years ago, as a medical redshirt he will not be eligible for the games in the first semester but will be back for a full Ivy season. I also think we badly need another front court player who is not offensively challenged. With Frankoski back we will have another good three point shooter.

I believe he should be eligible for the entire season---I think you have to play more than 4 games to be disqualified for the first semester. He didn't play that many games before going down, did he?

He was injured on November 14th in the first home game against Furman. I thought the rule was <30% of total games made you eligible for the whole season. He should be eligible.
It's true that we do have to take a step up. But as this season showed, we are so close, that if, for once, the stars align properly, we could easily challenge for the league. Based on last night, I'd like to experiment with a starting lineup of Barbour and Agho at guard, Cisco at center, and Rosenberg & Osetowski at forward. Lyles, Van Green, and Frankowski could cycle in as back up for the guards, and the frosh and improved sophs could backup the front line. Osetowski is poor ball handler, but in every other way, this lineup represents our best blend of offensive and defensive strength.

Agho is eligible next year per NCAA rules provided he is eligible to get a 5th year for academic reasons (league/school rules). Adding a 2nd major typically does the trick.

I think that we need one more front court player to emerge. Osetkowski and Cisco should stay where they are. I see Rosenberg as the SF. I think we need one more player up front who can run in the transition game, finish around the basket and hit from midrange. I am also assuming that we can get 20 to 25 minutes a night from Agho, with an improved Lyles in the mix. But we need somebodynwhomcan back up Barbour and keep his minutes down to around 32 or 33.

One of the freshmen might be able to do what we need, except that from their HS stats, both En Wezoh and Coby seem better at rebounding than scoring, and that's a big responsibility to put on a freshman.
Incidentally, amid all the talk about how no college coaches saw much in Lin, there was one who did, namely Kyle Smith, who, consistent with his reputation for spotting unrecognized talent, tried to recruit him when he was an assistant at St. Mary's. See

I think the Lions and PU will be pre-season co-2nd place choices to take the league w/ H still expected to lead the way. Penn will be in a total rebuilding mode for probably 2 years and lucky to go .500 in the league in '12-'13. Nobody else has enough upside to be even be longshot contenders. Lions have a shot.
