The silence about Engles and next year’s team, as opposed to the extensive information on our women’s team, speaks volumes on the dire straits in which we find ourselves. Is there any glimmer of hope for next season?

You should tell your copy editor to work on his headlines, then.

Columbia appears to have recently offered Adam Scherbakov, a high scoring juco player in Texas via Israel. Two promising bigs--Arop Arop and Richard Nweke--are the only commitments known publicly.

Adam Scherbakov is a 3 pt. specialist in the vein of Steve Frankoski and K.J. Matsui. He only averaged 7.6 minutes per game in college, but hit on 47% of his 3 pt shots. Although it's good to have him join the team, it remains unclear whether he possesses any of the other skills that would enable him to assume a larger role.

Frankoski was in my opinion a lot more than a three point specialist. He was a very good all around player who had a career game against Yale in which we upset them with something like 27 from Frankoski.

My assumption is that all of the Ivy League schools will be announcing the names of their incoming commitments in every sport during the month of May. That being the case we will know shortly whether or not Columbia will be competitive next season. Meanwhile, good luck to both our Women's Softball Team in the Ivy League Tournament and our Baseball Team that needs a win tomorrow against Penn to clinch a spot in the Ivy Tournament.

The semi-annual Engles letter is out; chock full of inside information and brimming with details, including a dinner at a restaurant which sounded vaguely like another well-known NYC steak house.
