With all the changes in Lewisburg, and the talk of creating a corridoor, it occurs to me that Charlie Pollock and his gentle ways of improving but also keeping the integrity of the town are missed. In its place well meaning but slightly aggressive and impulsive plans which are quite anti-Bucknellan traits are being implemented out on the town.
The Barnes and Noble, The Campus theater, and the post office building is now Bucknell's. The stores on Market St. have all been shuffled around, with some stores moving to prime spots and other stores being evicted and moving to the other side of town. A Subway has moved in.
There is clearly the Bucknell area of Market St., and the other area of Market.
Perhaps this is Bucknell's way of expanding the bubble outward. I hope it succeeds. it is at the high cost of small town heritage and a little town diversity is lost too.
Granted, this townie can get a great cup of coffee, read nearly any book or magazine popular or academic, and see the latest movies like the Hunger Games that is now playing. Thank You. But please be a little more gentle on this town, for not only our sake but yours. If this impulsive steamrolling continues, it will not be good for Bucknell long term.
Now, Bucknell is having Irish Dancers at the Weis Center this weekend. This is the the Bucknell I know and love. A first class show at a first class venue. Maybe I will skip a few coffees, not see the Hunger games a second time, and save my money and go venture from town and see the show. Like a fine wine, I know it will be a worth seeing.
Its just so un-Bucknellian to impulsively snatch up half the town and leave the other half hanging. Charlie would have not have done that. He would have been more gentle about it, for sure.

Paulie, 20 years ago, the Market Street merchants were wondering how to get more students to come downtown to shop. Being an SAE, it was easy for me to walk a few blocks to Market Street, but for students who lived in Kress and other uphill housing, many of them never ventured further into town than the laundry on 7th St.

Now, the students are almost forced to visit Market Street. I would have to think that this has been an injection of new money and jobs in Lewisburg.

So, which do you want? A dieing Market Street with empty stores or a changing Market Street that has the potential to bring lots of money, jobs, and opportunities to the Lewisburg Community?

I'm sure nothing will ever be perfect, but it is clear that the Bookstore has created a large increase in foot traffic on Market Street. Also, had it not been for Bucknell's large investment, the Campus Theatre would have shut its doors for good a long time ago. And the Post Office building has been extensively renovated - bringing more activity downtown as well. So while things may not be perfect, I'd say that things in the downtown area are generally far better than they were a decade ago.

2012-13 Attendance: 19 games and 8,354 miles driven.

Paulie has apparently joined the nation's little-known population of wine-viewing enthusiasts.
