UK must have watched the Temple and Wisconsin tapes. They're playing very good defense...good switching...after the initial flurry, not a ton of open looks so far for Cornell.

Agreed. Cornell's only going to stop Kentucky so much. They have to outscore them to win. So far that's going to be tough.

And they have to do the little things, like grabbing defensive boards, making FTs, and avoid telegraphing passes.
We haven't seen Cornell's A game yet...they will need it if they want to win. Kentucky's playing like they want it more.

Dang! This is a game I've seen before. Kentucky is making the whole Cornell team work for everything. Can they play with this type of intensity for a whole game? Currently on a 23-6 run.

This could get very ugly. Wittman and Dale have been rendered invisible by the perimeter D. Also, the supporting cast players who did all the little things in the previous games have been liabilities most of the time they've been out there, Coury and Wire in particular.

The truth is that Foote is their best option right now. But he's taking too long to set up. He's had an open baseline any number of times if he just started to spin there once he gets the ball.

Maybe all these breaks can get Kentucky out of its defensive rhythm.
Agreed, that the subs have looked outmatched. Not surprising, we just haven't seen it.

Sheesh. Kentucky ends half on a 30-6 run. That was impressive.

I know Calipari is a rogue coach and I have no idea how much that UK team gets paid, but to start three freshman and a soph and play D like that, the guy can coach.

I'm sure that was the fewest number of shots put up by Cornell in a half in a long, long time.

I don't even know what adjustments you make at the half, except for perhaps trying to pound it into Foote more.

UK-Cornell 03-25-10 10:58 PM - Post#80149

Ugh. Kentucky's defense is just too much. I haven't seen anyone defend the arc like that against Cornell since, well, Princeton. And then you throw in Kentucky's offensive weapons...not a good recipe. For all the CU TOs and UK transition buckets, the frustrating thing is that holding Kentucky to 32 pts in the first half isn't bad at all. The Wildcat defense simply turned it up a notch after the first five minutes or so.
There was a moment where Calipari was chewing out Cousins (who was having a great game) while he was on the bench and I just wanted DeMarcus to punch that POS in the face.

Defensively maybe pack the zone in tight, prevent anyone from getting into the lane in the halfcourt, take your chances entirely with the three. They were getting killed most of the half by dribble penetration into the gaps.

Surely they could improve on getting to loose balls on both sides of the court. That has severely limited their number of opportunities to shoot.

There was one play very early that was a little too telling: Kentucky missed, and three Cornell guys let the rebound hit the floor without even getting a hand on it, then let a Kentucky guy scoop it up for a second chance opportunity. Just terrible.

Someone except Wittman has to shoot 3s. They are on him like glue, and he's turning it over as a result of being preoccupied with creating his own shot. Jaques, Wrobo, and Reeves need to step up.
Needless to say, this is not looking good whatsoever, but Cornell is the #1 3-pt shooting team in the nation and they're probably the only non-explosive team that has a prayer at getting back in this game.
