Bill Carmody's Northwestern Wildcats dropped a 48-44 decision to #25 Virginia last night on ESPN2. They shot a frustratingly low 37% against Pete Gillen's 3-2 zone, and were just 7-21 behind the arc. They were outrebounded 28-21, and had an uncharacteristically high 15 turnovers although they did have 15 assists on 17 field goals.
The fans may or may not like a lot of passing, but I know they don't like losing. -- Pete Carril

Northwestern did not look very good. Virginia did not look like a Top 25 team either. Northwestern was lucky to be as close as they were. They did not move the ball very well and did not create open looks. They rarely were able to pass inside the zone nor did they pass it quickly enough around the zone to stretch the defense. To borrow an old Carrilism, Northwestern has guardable players and Virginia guarded them. Easily. Transfer center Mike Thompson will be eligible at the end of the fall semester. Maybe he can save their season.
