need to win tuesday and make better decisions next time

Tuesday is really the key -- the fact is, the calls were 90% Harvard in the first half and Maddox missed several layups he usually makes. And STILL, we had a shot until Davis's gaffe.

Credit Harvard -- they made a super-tough shot whenever Princeton threatened to make a run. Those guys are borderline bubble-team worthy, playing at their house, and we only brought our B-game.

To be fair, even if Davis had hit a 3 instead making that horrible decision, there, I think Harvard's FT shooting would almost certainly give them the win anyway -- the score would just look nicer.

Chip, you know that they are indeed Ivy League champions. It's only a matter of whether they share it or not. Could be worse, it's not like they cut the nets down in an empty gym. As usual, the road to the tournament will have to go through the Palestra.

I know, I know ... the presentation by ESPN3 made it sound as if the outright title had been decided, which is what I was making fun of.

Did they cut the nets down?

Although at the tail end the announcer did clarify that it was merely a tie for the title, and then he went into the Tuesday scenario and potential playoff.

Well, I had a one-bar picture in the second half--the players looked like characters in a 1980s arcade game and the ball was hard to see. So I'm not going to complain about calls I couldn't make out.

Davis did not have a very good game on either end of the floor (one nice steal though). Wright seemed to be causing problems for the Tigers as a defender--their inside attack was off. This is the kind of game where the "old-school" Princeton offense, with more motion and spacing and hard back cuts would have been handy.

I disagree with gokinsmen, though--our biggest problem was on defense. Curry penetrated at will and picked us apart. Casey got a ton of good looks and made them. They shot over 50% in the first half, which is way out of character for our defense. We didn't seem to get very many stops in a row at any point of the game. The only good news was solid rebounding.

Here's an idea--when in man defense keep the ball out of Curry's hands. Make somebody else try to make a contested pass to him. He might get a couple of backdoors but it could throw their offense off. I generally like that kind of "decapitation" strategy against a team that has a dangerous distributor, but coaches don't seem to. Maybe they know something that I don't.

The one announcer was a total homer. Every time Harvard did anything he gave us his Gus Johnson impersonation. Really tough to take.

I was also suffering from the one bar photo (but it won't stop from complaining about the refs). Maddox usually defends against the opposing team's best player. Seemed like we had Hummer on Casey much of the game instead of Maddox. Was I missing something?

SRP, it's a pick-your-poison offense (and so are we). I'd rather make Curry thread passes inside to Wright than let Casey or Rivard take over.

We just have to tip our cap to the Crimson tonight -- those guys are very good. So are we. And we split a two-game series. No biggie.

Dunno, Chip. My feed was cutting in and out after the Davis gaffe. Spiking my laptop probably didn't help.

Pat, how are you going to watch Tuesday's game with a spiked laptop?

So they rushed the court, and the ESPN3 announcers declared them Ivy League champs.

Oh, wait ...

Technically they are Ivy co-champs no matter what.

Doesnt mean much without the NCAA bid, they really tempted the basketball gods by storming, clearly a violation of storming the court rules

Does a 5-game losing streak to Princeton count?

I ain't down wit this one. Didn't clinch anything. RT @TheHoopsReport: Harvard fans rushed the court.

I guess not the expert made a ruling

Ah. That's funny seeing as he goes onto say:
  • Quote:
Clinching an Ivy championship is sufficient grounds.

He should amend the site to read "Clinching the Ivy NCAA berth is sufficient grounds."

I think it used to just say "The Ivy League? I don't think so." but I think he changed it after Cornell won 2 years ago and added the Cornell Addendum after the stat sheet guy's computer was destroyed in the court storming:
"The Winn Embargo: If at all possible, try not to step on the poor schlubs on press row. We know it's tempting, but they're just trying to do their jobs. This goes for clock operators too (The Cornell Addendum)

Those guys take court storming rules very seriously

I don't really care about this kind of thing. It was a huge, exciting, ESPN-"televised" win against someone they've lost to five times in a row. And it clinches a share of the title -- which means a guaranteed NIT if nothing else. They should be thrilled.

On the other hand, I did NOT appreciate that dude from UCF running down the lane and dunking the ball -- up four with two seconds left and nobody around him. That was just a juvenile move to run up the score. Of course, UCF later got karmically-served when they had that inexplicably horrific losing streak soon afterward.

Not to worry, Chip. I was exaggerating a bit. Obviously, I'm hoping for a Princeton win, but I do think it would be fitting for these teams to faceoff on a neutral court - could be another game at the Palestra!

With regards to storming the court, I'd agree with gokinsmen - this is a historic win for them. We can't say they should act like they've been there before, because they haven't.
