Every year there seem to be a couple head-scratchers at the end of the 2nd round -- guys totally off the radar who get one pre-draft workout...and get drafted. Teams taking a flyer on a crazy diamond in the rough.
For obvious reasons, though, this is extra strange. Not to mention the fact that Mangano doesn't have great size/athleticism (unlike, say, Maddox) and struggled against BCS competition (unlike, say, Lin who excelled). He had a really great season, but leaving as a junior in the Ivy?
Maybe he has some personal family connection to an NBA team. Or maybe he has an offer to play overseas and he/his family really needs the money (i.e. might as well declare for the draft). There's time to withdraw of course, but it's still weird as heck. I mean, I actually do wish him luck. Dumb tweets notwithstanding, it's great to see Ivy athletes succeeding in the pros.
P.S. I wonder what Kareem's plans are. It's kinda lame he didn't get a Portsmouth invite. Too late of a late-bloomer, I guess.

Yeah it will be interesting if he decides to undeclare and return to Yale. I wonder if Sands will return, if he finished that journey he had to take?

Aren't the rules that you can declare for the draft as a junior (or sophomore) but if you don't have an agent, you can pull back if you're not selected?

12.2.4.2.1 Exception—Basketball—Four -Year College Student-Athlete.
12.2.4.2.1.1 Men’s Basketball. In men’s basketball, an enrolled student-athlete may enter a profes-
sional league’s draft one time during his collegiate career without jeopardizing eligibility in that sport,
provided: (Adopted: 4/30/09 effective 8/1/09)
(a) The student-athlete requests that his name be removed from the draft list and declares his intent
to resume intercollegiate participation not later than the end of May 8 of the year in which the
draft will occur;
(b) The student-athlete’s declaration of intent is submitted in writing to the institution’s director of
athletics; and
(c) The student-athlete is not drafted.
I dont think he can wait that long, he has to undeclare by May 8 according to the above quote

Another theory:
It could be a publicity stunt/tactic to raise his profile for next year. For what it's worth, Jeff Goodman (FoxSports) and Matt Norlander (CBSsports) both tweeted about it.

To return he has to withdraw his name by May 8, but he also cannot accept airfare or anything else from NBA clubs to go to workouts, so he would have to pay his own way or the teams have to come to him.

Could this have anything to do with why he was so miffed at not getting Ivy POY?

Maybe he thinks this is the way to raise his profile with potential agents for next year? Even if he's never NBA material, he certainly has the sort of game that could lead him to a successful career in Europe - the body to bang, but with some perimeter shooting skills as well.

Did I need to put the part about agents and Europe in bold so you could see that I was narrowing to specifics?

"The most important thing to me right now remains the fact that I came to Yale to get a first class education and graduate from this university," Mangano said. "The decision to declare for the draft is just something we decided would be beneficial for my future. Playing in the NBA has always been a dream of mine, and this may help my cause."
Sounds like what you were saying about raising his stock for next year

But that stuff goes without saying. That's what "raising his profile" means.

“Coach (James) Jones told me there were some teams that expressed some interest and he said that this path was the best thing for me to do right now,†Mangano said. “It gets me some exposure.
“I fully intend on pulling my name out by the May 8 deadline. There is a form I have to send into the NBA offices by May 8. I haven’t hired an agent and that will get me fully reinstated by the NCAA.â€
Mangano didn’t disclose which teams have shown interest.
“It’s definitely exciting. It’s exciting to know there is some interest.â€
Mangano said his decision wasn’t impacted by the commonly held belief that this is a weak NBA draft.
“I’ve looked at the mock drafts but I haven’t really studied them,†he said. “I’ve read that it really isn’t a strong draft this year. Next year could be a stronger draft but it really doesn’t make a difference. My plan right now is to get some exposure and then come back to Yale and have a really big season next year.
“I fully intend on graduating from Yale and that’s why I went there in the first place.â€

Glad to read that he is planning to come back. It will make the league stronger and a more interesting race.

Greg Mangano may be getting some of the exposure he was looking for.
