School was cancelled today, as the Susquehanna is already 5 feet over flood stage and expected to crest at 11.5 feet above flood stage late tonight. Not surprisingly, Buffalo Creek has long since flooded several blocks along 6th and 7th Street - with some of the student housing on 6th Street seeing significant flood conditions. People are being evacuated from a significant area of downtown.
Not as bad as Agnes in 1972 - but probably the worst since then.
Any reporte from our locals?

Bison137, you pretty much said it all in your concise paragraph. Basically it has been raining since Sunday night and a heavy rain at that. The ground was already overwhelmed by the Irene storm but this rain is from Katia. This is the worst flooding I have ever seen here by far, but it doesn't match my neighbors description of the Agnes 72 flooding that 137 mentioned.
Lewisburg schools were let out early yesterday and closed today and probably will be closed tomorrow.
Residents are being evacuated from the downtown area. At least one basement has collapsed that I know firsthand. Many towns along the Susquehanna are being evacuated also.The rain stopped this morning and I really hope the worst is over. Even the buildings that are not affected by the flooding look drenched.

Appears the entire region is bracing for Agnes-like situations. All schools are closed and may be through possibly Monday, although that wasn't yet announced. Danville flood wall is in place but additional sand-bagging is taking place already. Bloomsburg University is closed until Tuesday at the earliest (due to many closed roads and more importantly, extremely limited water supply). I-80 is closed from Danville to Lightstreet. River crests continue to rise by the hour in most locations. Rain continues to fall with very few breaks.

I was there during the flooding in 1996, which was pretty bad - high enough to flood 6th Street up to car windows. I'd be curious to see pictures of the current situation.

Just looked at the weather map. Looks like Lewisburg and the West Branch just barely dodged a large monsoon-like front that is traveling south to north over the Bloomsburg area. Everything to the immediate west didnt' get hit badly so hopefully Buffalo Creek will start to subside. Unfortunately it looks like there will be more rain - hopefully light - later today.

Route 15 is closed north of Lewisburg. The bridge that connects Shamokin Dam with Northumberland (Rt. 11) is closed as well. Over 1100 students are now housed temporarily in the Fieldhouse, due to concerns about electric panels in the residence halls.

Also, yesterday, one of the more established trees that was just inside the cemetery by 7th St. collapsed...it's a sight to see.

The river is expected to crest at 27.6 feet, well below the 34.23 feet that was Agnes in 1972.
To compare it to Mattie g's 1996 flood, the river crested then to 25.9 feet, so this is a similar height as the present situation.

I hear that one person didn't listen to BU's recommendation to move all cars that were parked within a block of Buffalo Creek and left his/her SUV parked near SAE. The water apparently crested near the roof of the car.

Have all of those people definitely been moved? I heard that those living in Larison/Harris/etc were told to be ready to evacuate because water might reach the basement areas and force them to shut off electricity - rendering the main doors inoperative. However my source thought that at this point those dorms are still open and the creek may have crested.

I recall a nice flood one September while I was still there. I think it was 2005. I recall canoes going down 6th Street.
How does it compare to that?

The site linked by Paulie above has a link to historical flood crests. I've listed the top 15. I'd guess the one you're talking about was the one in September 2004. It looks like this one will be about the same - at least for the Susquehanna - with revised estimates showing the river cresting at about 26', which thankfully is much lower than was projected this morning. According to this site, the part of downtown Lewisburg by the river begins to flood at about 25'. If that is the case, flooding from the river will probably be minor compared to the flooding already seen by 6th Street.

Wow, those pictures are something. Hopefully the worst is over. Just for historical accuracy, this flooding is caused by rains related to former hurricane Lee. Katia is out in the Atlantic and will not make landfall anywhere in the US, but may be responsible for holding the rains associated with Lee in central PA, and NY for longer than might have been the case had Katia not been there retarding the north/eastward progression of Lee.
Thought and prayers are with all of those effected by this catastrophe.
