The league opens with all road games - most of them tough ones:

FRI:

BU @ Minnesota
HC @ College of Charleston (CoC was very good last year but four starters are gone)
LC @ LaSalle
Army @ Air Force
AU @ Richmond
CU @ Binghamton
Navy @ Longwood

SAT:

LU @ Iowa State (LU already played at St Johns Wednesday)
2012-13 Attendance: 19 games and 8,354 miles driven.

LU also lost after leading most of the game, including a lead of (I believe) 14 points with 11 minutes left.

Here's how the PL teams have been doing so far:

Lehigh - After losing the close game at St. Johns, they lost by nine at Iowa State in a game that was not as close as the score. Then they won on the road at weak FDU by 11 points.

Today they blew out William and Mary 82-57 in the 2K Classic at Liberty. Good games from McCollum, Knutson, and Greiner. Also some good scoring from frosh SG Stefan Cvrkalj, who played in Ontario not far from where Bryson played. W&M is so-so this year (picked for middle-of-the-pack in the CAA and Pomeroy #201 thus far) but the LU margin is impressive. Going into this game, LU was ranked #155 By Pomeroy. (BU is #122.) They will play Liberty and Eastern Kentucky the next wo games in this tournament.

One other item of note is that today's LU game marked the return of BJ Bailey. Bailey transferred from Boston U to LU at midyear of his freshman year after starting a couple of early games for Boston. However after sitting out a year, he was unable to play second semester last year due to severe post-concussion syndrome and then was not allowed to practice with them in the fall at least partly due to unexplained NCAA issues. My best guess is that LU had declared that he would never be allowed to play again and thus used his scholarship. Then when he recovered, they were over the scholarship limit.

Holy Cross
- Lost at College of Charleston and at home to Harvard by 9 points each. CofC led by 20 at the half, with HC having a good second half. In contrast, Harvard was close for much of the game. 5'7" frosh PG Justin Burrell was good in Game 1 and bad in Game 2. RJ Evans looks like he is back to his old (i.e. good) form. Cavataio is out for a month or more with a broken hand.

HC hosts Boston College tonight in the DCU in Worcester.

Lafayette - Was blown off the court at LaSalle in Game 1, but then has won relatively close games with both St. Francis programs in recent days. Their preseason All-PL PG Tony Johnson is still out - and not expected back until January (back injury). Starting center Levi Giese sprained an ankle at the start of Game 1 and is still out, but that is not a huge loss.

Senior PF Ryan Willen is playing really well. Apparently recoverd from his injury issues of last year. Senior SG Jim Mower also playing well. LC has had good play from frosh SF Seth Hinrichs and frosh SG Joey Ptasinski. Also are starting frosh center Dan Trist from Australia while Giese is out. Looks like a good freshman class for the Pards.

They host a good Wagner squad tomorrow.

Colgate - Beat a bad Binghamton team on the road by four in Game 1. Lost at Wisconsin by 27 points.

CU is a very experienced team who should be much improved with seniors Gyawu (very good forward), SG Venezia, C Pascale, and SF Melville, plus junior PG Rolls. One of the reasons for improvement is that John Brandenburg, the 6'11" center who transferred from VA two years ago and was a bust last year, has played much better this year - 8.5 rpg, 8 ppg, and 3 bpg in 22 mpg. (Note: a lot of his stats in the Wisconsin game came in garbage time.)

They face Syracuse tomorrow.

American - Opened up by losing at Richmond by ten, after leading for a fair amount of the game.
Then had a bad OT loss at UMES followed by a very good home win over Flordia Atlantic. The biggest surprise thus far is the scoring (24 ppg) of forward Charles Hinkle, who did not score much last year after gaining elibility after transferring from Vandy. He is taking a ton of shots - not hitting a very good pct but getting to the line constantly. Wroblicky, forced into the starting center role after Lumpkins' defection to MLB, is averaging 9 rpg thus far, albeit with very few points. Munoz is playing better at PG, with 15 assists and 2 turnovers thus far (but almost no points), and former PG washout Blake Jolivette is doing well as a SG, averaging 10 ppg in 27 mpg.

Navy - Won their first two games, beating a weak Longwood squad and then a horrible D3 team (PSU-Altoona). Then lost by about 10 points at Siena. Siena is generally picked for 6th or 7th in the MAAC this year.

Stats are somewhat misleading thus far - since PSU-Altoona is about as good as some PSU-State College intramural teams - but not surprisingly Avila and Sugars are leading the team. DeChellis has given double figure minutes thus far to 9 players, and a fair amount to a few other players. They are still trying to figure out who their PG should be. Junior guard Jordan Brickman, who was a very highly regarded recruit in the Lange era but never played, is seeing about 13 mpg.

They play at a fairly good Quinnipiac team tomorrow in a game that will be a good test for them.

Army - Lost two disappointing games on the road to Air Force and the Citadel, after leading for the first half of each game. Then blew out woeful D3 Marywood, in a game that proved nothing.

Not surprisingly, their leading scorer is forward Ella Ellis. More surprising is that their second leading scorer is frosh guard Mo Williams, who played for MAPS last year. Their starting PG is 5'11" Max Lenox, who originally committed to George Washington but then decommitted and did a postgrad year. Spiker has been giving significant minutes to about ten players thus far, as they try to figure out who should be on the court.

They play at a good CCSU team tomorrow in what should be a good test for them.

HC leads BC by ten with 11:15 left. BC is weak this year - in fact Pomeroy had HC as a two-point favorite - but a HC win would still be nice.

With BC starting three frosh, it would not be surprising for HC to hang onto the lead.

Edit: HC now up by 15 with nine minutes left. Looks like it's over.

HC now up 19 with 7+ minutes left. It's over. Good win for the Crusaders and the PL.

Yes. Doubt it's going to look like much on paper come March, but HC needed this win... badly.

Yep. BC looks very weak this year, having lost virtually everyone from last year. Will be lucky to get two wins in the ACC.

The big margin by HC also should help the league a bit in Pomeroy and Sagarin. Combined with recent good wins by LU and AU, and two decent wins by LC, and the league's ranking is starting to look pretty good. Now the Bison have to do more than just stay fairly close on the road to BCS-conference teams.

Rough afternoon, but none of those losses was at all unexpected. The CU margin was disappointing but their best player (Gyawu) did not play. Not sure why.

The later games were better for the PL however. BU of course won, and Lehigh beat Liberty while AU beat Columbia. LC kept it close with Wagner but lost by six. McCollum had a huge game for LU, while Willen and Hinkle continue to light it up for LC and AU respectively.

FWIW, here is where the PL ranks thus far (out of 33 conferences). Still way too early to be fully credible, but so far looking significantly better than last year:

Pomeroy: 21st
Sagarin: 23rd (still incorporates some of last yr)
Current RPI: 23
Expected RPI at season end: 19

Among others, the PL is ahead of the Ivy, NEC, and America East. Only marginally behind the MAAC, although it's unlikely the league can challenge the MAAC over the whole season.

Mixed results today for the PL.

- HC lost by 20+ points at Fairfield. It was close early in the second half but then the Stags quickly pulled away. HC couldn't contain Fairfield's two strong forwards in the paint.

- LU blew out Eastern Kentucky to complete a 3-0 weekend in the 2K Classic. It was expected to be a close game, with EK having beaten William & Mary and host Liberty fairly easily the previous two games.

It's looking like Bucknell and Lehigh are 1 and 1A at this point, with Holy Cross also looking dangerous, especially when they get back the injured Cavataio. Lafayette also has been surprisingly good, considering they don't have the league's best PG (Tony Johnson) plus their starting center (Levi Giese).

The teams are doing well overall. Nice way to start the season. Bison 137, you know Andoh is my other guy. How do you see him contributing this year? I see his minutes are scattered the last few games. Adams is getting some time at LU at the moment. Johnson from Lafayette is my guy after Andoh and Adams leave. I have to keep up with my CA guys:).

I think Andoh's minutes as a backup center largely depend on how Brian Fitzpatrick plays. In some ways, Fitzpatrick better fits Paulsen's style in that he is mobile and can play away from the basket, and has an OK outside shot. However, Enoch is stronger and better able to guard the bigger centers. He also can score on most centers if he's allowed to stay in the low post. How much he plays may be dependent on who the other team's center is.

The St. Francis game was not a great style of play for Enoch since SF largely played a very active 1-3-1 zone where BU really couldn't just post up a player and get the ball to him. Even with Muscala in the game, BU didn't do a good job with timely ball movement. Rarely was he able to get the ball before a weakside wing had rotated over to double him.

Thanks Bison. Your comments make sense. I hope he can finish his senior year with some time on the court. If I recall, there were some similar matchup issues when they played Gordon and Andoh, usually with Gordon getting the minutes until he was injured. This is when Andoh began to shine.

One take away from the CCSU-Army game...

The starting PG for CCSU is Malcolm McMillan, a freshman that was briefly a BU target (Mentioned by Doctore K and eric). He played 34 minutes, and while only had 4 points (on 2-3 shooting) had 7 Asts, 5 stls, and 1 TO.
