Siena is 3-8, 0-2 in the MAAC. They have lost seven of their last eight games. They look ripe for the pickings. Is Princeton favored against the Saints and by how much?

Siena's O. D. Anosike is not to be taken likely. He averages around 14 pts (17 if he made his free throws) and 12 rbs. He has very good moves around the basket and will give whoever is guarding him from PU fits.

And at 6-8/232, he sounds like a good dress rehearsal for Wright. Let's see if Connolly and Darrow can contain him some.

It looks like Siena has the same video setup as Northeastern - stretchinternet - which means this may be a free webstream:

http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/siena.por...

The game starts at 7:00 pm.

If you have access to ESPN3, that might still be the better option...

Perhaps, but the StretchInternet webstream of the Princeton-Northeastern game in HD was about as good as it gets.

The StretchInternet game tonight, Princeton vs. Siena, cost $7.95.
Not Free!--but please correct me if I'm wrong

I went to the ESPN3 page and clicked on the "upcoming" tab -- but there's no Princeton vs. Siena listed. On the (possible) bright side, there is a placeholder link on the new ATDHE site:

http://www.atdhe.tv/

So maybe someone will post a link come game time (whether it's ESPN3's stream or not).

No espn3, despite espn labeling, and Siena link is audio only. There is still the audio link on the PU athletics website.

Ouch. I didn't get to watch the game, but this has to be a big step backward for the team. Looking at the boxscore, it looked like both teams had the same strategy -- swarm the star big man and make everyone else beat you. And Siena's supporting cast outplayed Princeton's. Bray and Davis were game but no one else did anything -- Saunders with the especially painful 0-5 and 5PFs.

Princeton has to find a way to score beyond 3pt shooting when Hummer is covered or having an off-night. By taking 3s all night, the guys let Siena off the hook in a major way -- Siena has talent but no depth (only 7 scholarship players available). They have to pound the ball inside, wear down the opposing frontcourt, and get FTs. A team this big taking only 6FTAs all night? Yikes.

Well said. So who can step up and go to the hoop other than Hummer? No one comes to mind.......

Why such a foul discrepancy tonight? Did Princeton foul a lot late?

Here's a serious question fro you Tiger followers: I've noticed over the past couple years that Princeton, more than probably any Ivy team, plays its supporting cast somewhat randomly (although I'm sure there must be a reason). A few games ago, Comfort appeared and played a decent amount, than not. Koon looked like a key guy coming off the bench but got 3 minutes tonight. Moreso than the other teams, Princeton's coaches try a lot of different combos in the pre-Ivy games. True, or my imagination? And if so, does anyone have an idea why? My sense was that Carril and Carmody were far more likely to play an Iron 6 or 7.

From what I read and heard on the radio, Siena just played a lot of zone and Princeton hit and thus settled for 3s. When they finally went inside later in the game, they didn't get the calls. Which will happen when you're not aggressive.

As for the erratic rotation, I think it has to do with philosophy -- i.e. the idea of a (college) coach as a mentor as well as a winner of games. Before you groan, I've said repeatedly that SJ's only weakness was that he's "too nice." Based on his interviews over the years, SJ likes playing guys for reasons other than talent (MH has exhibited similar tendencies so far). He over-values seniority, attitude and effort. Even when players flop, SJ and MH don't give up on them just yet.

Of course, the problem is that playing Sherburne too often or Saunders too long hurts your chances to, you know, win games. So you end up yanking them from the rotation. But then you put them back in -- if they've "earned" another try through hard work in practice and a positive attitude despite their initial benching.

Just so there's something concrete to point to -- I realize my comments are still just "informed speculation" -- compare the 1st, 2nd, 3rd go-arounds of Sherburne, Barrett and Connolly (spanning two seasons) with Amaker's seemingly permanent demotions of Max Kenyi, Dee Giger, Ugo Okam, Andrew Van Nest, and Jeff Georgatos.

Alright, you could say that Harvard's increasingly stacked recruiting classes prevent players from getting second chances while Princeton has to retry their "failed" veterans. But then ask yourself how the heck Ian Hummer only got 18mpg as a frosh with Zach Finley and Pawel Buczak ahead of him.

Having seen Hummer the freshman play a number of times, he was one half the player he is now. Back then he didn't deserve a lot of minutes.

I agree that Hummer was only half the player he is now...but that was still as good or better than Finley or Buczak. Not saying he should have played 35mpg. But only 18+? On that team? Come on.

Finley and Buzcak had to suffer through the Scott years, but somehow, someway, they had one last chance to make a darkhorse run at the title. So I don't begrudge SJ playing them so much -- they deserved it, win or lose.

SJ would talk about Buczak's tireless work, in particular. This was a guy who was mostly recruited for tennis, but stepped up big time to become a legit basketball player. Even when Buczak struggled in his senior season (when teams were wise to him), he kept hustling and playing defense. SJ saw that, praised him for it and rewarded his effort with more PT than his performance probably merited. Especially when you consider the importance of developing a talent like Hummer for the future.

Connolly keeps playing because he is by far the best--perhaps the only--post defender against true pivotmen that the Tigers have. He can't be taken out of the rotation because eventually the team will face Wright and Manganoand he will need to be in the flow. Any offense from him, at this point will unfortunately have to be treated as a bonus.
