A relative of mine just got a phone call from someone who used to be on the Board of Trustees, looking for tickets for Friday night. Wow - that is a tough ticket.

I could be wrong, but if the one seed wins the tourney doesn't the 2 seed get the auto bid? With the NCAA running the NIT the at large bids rarely go to the smaller conferences, so getting one of the top two spots is crucial.

Just looked it up, it's not automatic for the 2 seed, thought that was how the women got their bid last year.

Women and Men's NIT are different..
Women's that is the rule.. 2nd seed if #1 gets into the NCAA gets into NIT... such is not the case with the men

just saying, who cares about NIT, I certainly don't, need to dream big to reach it, not trying to motivate you, but we can win out, Iona is good but we can take them, i remember md a couple of years ago won acc regular season and no one thought they could with vasquez

I don't believe the team has ever had 20 wins so that could be another program first.
coming from the scott hicks days it's great to be talking about winning.

I don't know how long you have followed this program, but I have for over twenty years now - and an NIT bid would mean a hell of a lot to me.
I was fortunate enough to be a senior when Prosser's team made the run in the tourney, and obviously that is the number one aspiration every year. But do not discount the achievement of any MAAC school making the NIT. It is recognition for a truly excellent regular season and honor no other Loyola squad has ever approached - not even the 94 team.
This is mid-major basketball. The NIT is not a dirty acronym here.

I agree with jdp...the NIT is a big deal. Teams get autobids to the NCAA's from the MEAC and other weak conferences. Being selected for the NIT means that you have gotten yourself noticed.

This. times One billion... maybe you were only 12 or something when we only won 1 game in the season... once, one game. (not that I'm much older than you.. but Loyola's been in my blood for about 10 years now with relatives and what now)

wouldn't describe my mood as angry haha...
the point we are all trying to make is that for a program like Loyola, nevermind the fact that we are having a great year, the NIT is not just "okay" the NIT is absolutely awesome and would be such a huge milestone for this team. There's a reason there's no NIT Men's Banners in Reitz... we've never done it before. The one year we made the tournament, we made it as a #5 seed in the MAAC tourney and went on a run.... an NIT bid truly means that you had a consistently solid season, and were deemed probably one of the top 70 or so teams in the nation. (As most teams in the NIT are better than NCAA seeds 14-16 or so.)
For a team like Loyola, it's great to say, "yeah, our goal is to win a MAAC championship" but given our history.. it's just not practical to come out of the gate saying that.
It's sad it didn't get a ton of publicity last year but the Women making the NIT was a pretty awesome achievement... especially since they won a game in it.
An NIT bid exceeds my wildest expectations for this year, not saying I won't be happier if we make the NCAA... but to cast the NIT aside as a ho-hum tournament just isn't logical.

I don't think anything I wrote implied I was angry. I'm certainly not. I have tickets for Knicks/Lakers on Friday Night and I'm upset that I will not be able to watch Loyola live. THAT is unprecedented!
And absolutely, the focus is always on the BIG prize - the NCAA tourney. As a student who lived it, there is no substitute and I hope to see Evergreen explode like it did that night so many years ago.
But that said, with all the variables that go into winning 3 straight games in a tourney - IF we come up short - I would want the team, the coaches the students and everyone who cares about the program be extremely proud of playing in the NIT.

I feel like everyone here knows the chain of achievements. Of course you look to always win, so the ultimate goal would be NCAA Champions come April. But we will appreciate other achievements should they occur. I believe this would be the pecking order:
NCAA champions > Upsetting #1-10 seed in NCAA tourney > NCAA tourney automatic bid/MAAC tourney champion => NCAA tourney at-large bid > MAAC regular season champions => NIT bid > '95-'11 seasons

I guess I probably graduated before most of you were born, but let me tell you, an argument could be made that this program would benefit more from a trip to NIT than a one-and-done in the big dance.
Not saying it would, you always want the NCAA bid, but in the NIT you have a good chance to face name teams on down years and you’d have a legit chance to actually win some games.
That attention would be a huge help with recruiting and also with national perception (which affects future Bracketbusters, TV games, etc, etc).
I realize we all want the buzz that comes with an NCAA bid, and the chance to log an even bigger and more noticeable upset on national TV, but the point is you cannot minimize the worth of an NIT bid as a great second option. With the nature of the MAAC tourney, anything can and will happen, there’s no guarantees. At this point, winning the reg season is more in their grasp than counting on winning three games in Springfield.
I assume everyone out here is on the same page in terms of what we really want, but totally agree with those who say the NIT would be a big deal to this program. It’s far beyond just “okayâ€.
What’s really crazy to me is we built this great new stadium for lacrosse and soccer yet we could not sell out the Hopkins game the first year with a tourney bid on the line, and here were are now selling out regular games at Reitz. Wow.
