Jamion Christian, who was BU's director of basketball ops for two years under Pat, was just named the new head coach at his alma mater, Mount St. Mary's. He replaces Robert Burke, former American assistant, who took a leave of absence in February after less than two years on the job - 19-42 overall record.
I was always very impressed by Christian and had hoped DP would hire him as an assistant. Instead he jumped all the way up to a #2 assistant job in the CAA (William and Mary), where he was supposedly a great recruiter. Then last year he was hired by Shaka Smart at VCU. Moving up the ladder that quickly while still in his 20's says something about this character.
Christian was a 3-year captain at MSM, playing 3 years for the legendary Jim Phelan and his final year for Milan Brown. Also started at SS for their baseball team. I hope that once the MSM program is strong again that the Bison might play them. After all, MSM is the second closest D1 program to Bucknell. Thus I never understood why the two never played when MSM had good teams.

Being the head coach of a D1 team while still in your 20s is very impressive. Does anybody (aka 137) know the average age that a coach first becomes a head coach in D1 hoops? I would guess mid 30s, but that is just a guess.
How old was Coach P when he was hired by Bucknell?

I think Paulsen was 43 when hired by BU. He was just short of his 30th birthday when he got his first head coaching job - but there's a big difference between getting a D3 job at 29 or 30 and getting a D1 job. (It helps, of course, when the D1 job is your alma mater.)
Christian, btw, may have turned 30 fairly recently.

Interesting article on Christian, with a quote from Flannery.

It looks like Jamion is off to a pretty nice start in his D1 coaching debut season at his alma mater, Mount St. Mary's.
In his first game, he was baptized by fire, as Pitt destroyed the Mount 80-48. He got his first win against Hartford, lost to American and Georgetown, but the other night his squad beat George Washington. I liked this item in the Mount story on that game:
"It was the Mount's first win over a team from the Atlantic 10 Conference since a 77-63 win at Duquesne on Dec. 7, 2002…First-year head coach Jamion Christian scored 20 points in that victory."

Jamion's squad will have their hands full tonight. How would you like to be Indiana's opponent immediately after the Butler upset? It's on the Big 10 Network, by the way, but we have something more important to watch at that time.

Jamion Christian gets his first post-season victory, winning as a 5th seed against the #4 Bryant Bulldogs in the Northeast Conference Tournament. The Mount trailed by 7 at the half but came back to win.

Nice road win. They now will face #1 seed Robert Morris. I have a lot of respect for Jamion, who is doing well in his first year as a head coach (and only 30 years old).

Jamion is a budding superstar in the coaching ranks. His talents far exceed his age. In late January, MSM was 7-12 and in danger of missing the playoffs. Since then, they've won 10 of 11, including the last 8 in a row. Considering he took over a team that was 8-21 last year and was in shambles after the coach was fired in early February, it speaks volumes about Jamion's abilities to keep this year's team together after its 7-12 start.
From a numbers point of view, two jump off the page. MSM was 6-1 the second time around against the NEC opponents they played twice, and over the last month of the season, they outscored the opposition by 9 ppg after halftime.

You can see from my various posts on Jamion that I really like his coaching ability. To be fair, though, part of the reason for their turnaround is two transfers who sat out last year.
One is Rashad Whack, a guard who previously played at GMU. He leads MSM in scoring this year. The other is wing Sam Prescott, who was Marist's leading scorer two years ago. He is MSM's 3rd leading scorer and leading rebounder this year, despite playing a 6th man role.
To Jamion's credit, he has fit all the pieces together and produced a good team that is getting better. I think they have a legitimate shot to beat RMU on Saturday, even though Pomeroy has them as a 10-point underdog. BTW, they return all of their players next year, so they could have a chance to have a really good year.

I played against Kevin Baggett in HS. His team CRUSHED my high school every time we played them. I think that I will go home and have nightmares tonight . . . Where is my therapist's phone number?

Prescott has been a starter since Jamion employed a four-guard approach in early February. But, you're right, at 6-3 he is the leading rebounder around 4 per game. The starting post player is a senior who has been a moderate contributor most of his career ... not much more than that. But, he will need to be replaced.
I have always noted your positive remarks towards Jamion. Funny how things work out ... when DP had no interest in retaining any of the previous staff, it turned out to be the best thing for Jamion ... his experiences at W&M and VCU proved invaluable to him. On the floor, his team most resembles VCU's style of play. But, off the court, his attention to detail and his staff's professioalism are directly attributed to his time at Bucknell under Pat Flannery.
