We have one more year with a three-games-in-three-days tournament, away from Bucknell. What else do we know about next year's schedule?

Not positive as to when the series with SF and Cornell renew - but they seem to just keep going. Also think the Boston U and series ends this year - unless it is renewed.

Also I presume the Bison will have the customary two "buy" games with power-conference teams - plus whoever they play in the Gazelle Group event. BTW, looking at their website, it looks like the CBE event, which BU played in during the 2010-11 season, has disappeared and a new event with a different format ha emerged. Thus it is possible that BU might play in either one:

1. 2K Classic - four hosts are Purdue, Villanova, Alabama, and Oregon State. Same format as last two years, with an opener at one of the host schools followed by three subregional games such as the ones BU hosted this past season. This event is right at the start of the season. I think this is the more likely destination for BU.

2. Gotham Classic - three teams play games at both Syracuse and Temple. Then the three each play each other, with one game at home and one on the road. This event is in mid-December. I think this would be a great format.
2012-13 Attendance: 19 games and 8,354 miles driven.

For me, nothing beats the three-games-in-three-days format...particularly if it's in a cool city like Providence, but I also had a good time at James Madison.

On the other hand, I would like us to finally have a game against Temple.

I would love to see the Bison head my way, Jacksonville, FL. They could easily do a "cash" game against Florida and then play Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida from the Atlantic Sun. I can't remember the last time the Bison made it South but considering the abundance of teams now in the A-Sun as well as "cash" games with Florida State or even South Florida and Central Florida, they are welcome and I would be there!

I still can't believe we have never played at Seton Hall or at Rutgers (other than a scrimmage) in recent history. They get my vote!

I am in favor of any game in or near Philadelphia. 1. It is a great area for recruiting, and 2. It would be an excuse for me to fly home. I would love to see a game at The Cathedral of College Basketball (The Palestra).

Me too, especially since the last Bucknell game I saw there was a loss to Penn in December 2004. We fell behind HUGE early, prompting me to swap my vintage BUCKNELL VS SYRACUSE 1989 ECC Championship t-shirt for another Bucknell shirt I'd brought. (Penn's enormous early margin felt eerily Syracuse-esque.)

The rare, in-game wardrobe adjustment helped the Bison rally, but only enough to make the final score look somewhat respectable for the papers.

Of course, things were about to get a whole lot better for the Bison that season.

One bit of schedule news from the Awards Luncheon on Saturday. According to Coach P we are close to signing to play Penn State this coming season. One report is a 3 year deal with PSU coming to Sojka the second year ('13-14).

A three year commitment to play PSU would be great! The away games would be like home games. I think that Bucknell could get 2,000 fans to go to a game at Penn State this coming season.

If I had to throw a dart at a board, I would guess that 20% of 4,000 would be PSU fans. Eric, you can do the math. I stopped math at 1+1.

Chambers was at an Alumni function at Allenberry last night and mentioned BU was on the schedule for next season, but didn't say any more than that. Considering I hold a degree frm both institutions, this game is one I can't lose (or can't win, depending on how you look at it). Anyway, it's a game that should be played every year, and I'm so glad Chambers isn't chickening out like Dechellis did, and a trip to Lewisburg mixed in! I like PC... I like him even more if they agree to it, but like you I'll believe it when I see it.

Jeff Goodman, CBS Sports.com College Basketball Insider, has The Bison going to the 2K Classic this year. Host Teams include: Purdue, Alabama, Villanova, and Oregon State. Others in the field include: Hofstra, Niagara, and South Dakota State.

Thanks LU65. That seemed to be the likely destination and now it's confirmed. This means BU's season will start really early, since the first game with either Purdue, Alabama, Villanova, or Oregon State will be played between November 9th (Friday) and 11th (Sunday). Then the Bison would play a round robin with three other teams - probably on the following Friday through Sunday (11/16-18).

With Hofstra having participated last year, it would not surprise me to see them hosting a sub-regional. If so, I'd be very happy to see BU playing there.

Niagara board believes they are a sub-regional host and that they open with Villanova. still hoping Princeton is in the field and hosts us for the sub-reg. not sure on preference for opening game, someone beatable, but don't know enough to say who that might be.

One beatable team should be Villanova - coming off a bad year and having their two top scorers (Wayns and Cheek) both declare for the NBA draft. My guess, however, would be that Jay Wright blocked the Bison as a possible opponent.

Alabama was strong this past year and returns most of their team. However they lose both of their All-SEC players - one of whom was a senior and one who was suspeneded for the last part of the year and is now transferring. Thus they are likely to be worse.

Purdue of course was very good this year, but they lose arguably their three best players (Hummel, Jackson, and Smith), so they will likely be worse.

As for Oregon State, they were fairly good this year and lost in the semis of the hokey CBI tournament. They would have returned virtually their whole team, but their star 2G Jared Cunningham (All PAC-12 first team) declared for the NBA draft. Thus they will likely be fairly good again next year, but not a lot better.

Based on the above, I don't think any of the four 2K Classic opponents are likely to be as strong as Vandy or Marquette were the past two years.

I am very happy to see that Bucknell will be participating in another tournament next season. This seems to be the only way for a decent Mid Major to get bigger schools to play them.

Also, I like the three games in a weekend format. It gives the hardcore fan (a.k.a. BRW) the chance to see multiple games.

GO BISON!

It looks like this year's schedule could be potentially the most interesting schedule since the Flannery era. Penn State, George Mason, Missouri, etc. I would like to see a couple of decent Ivies added to round out the schedule.

I wonder how many PL schools will have Boston U on their schedule this coming season. I would guess around 1/2.

raises an interesting quandry. take Bucknell as an example. what if we agreed to extend the series we had with them providing us a home game this year and BostonU one the following year. in that case, they lose out unless we played them three times with on noncon came at Boston. certainly not likely. who would want to agree to a one game series as the away team? maybe no one plays them this year unless a contract already exists.

have not yet received the usual request to commit to renewing season tix. iirc, they usually sent that out in late June. wonder if this indicates we are having difficulty filling out home schedule, and hence lack sufficient info to price the package. any thoughts or has anyone received info on ticket renewals?

Here's a combination of what we know plus some rumors/guesses:

Nov 9 or 11: 2K Classic Opener: at Purdue, Alabama, Villanova, OR Oregon State

November 16-18 (probably): 2K Classic Sub-regional - 3 games, possibly at Niagara or maybe Hofstra.

November 23: at Penn State

Other road games: at Missouri, at Princeton, at St. Francis (PA), at Cornell, at Richmond (?), at Loyola (MD).

Home Games: Kent State, LaSalle, George Mason, Marist, Dartmouth.

The above shows 16 games, which is the total allowable number of ooc games, given that the four games in the 2K Classic effectively count as two games.

Note: Not 100% sure about Richmond, but BU still owes them a game if it was a 3-for-2 series ( as the LaSalle series was). Also not positive about Marist but that is likely since BU played them in 2012 but not in 2011. Additionally at one time there was a rumor about Harvard, but that game could only take place if one of the above games is not correct.

2/20 at Lehigh

2/27 American
3/2 at Navy

That looks like an exciting schedule. I hope that they open with Nova, but I would be happy with any of the teams in the 2K Classic Opener.

BTW, why Niagara or Hofstra for the Sub-regional 2K Classic?

I find the PL schedule very amusing. For years the PL did not revise the schedule. We opened with Navy, then American followed by HC etc. Then last year they finally changed things up by simply reversing the schedule. Now here is the reversed schedule again. One thing is certain, they don't spend a lot of time thinking about the hoops schedule at the PL offices.

Someone on Niagara's board said they were hosting a sub-regional. I don't know if that is accurate but I have no reason to think it isn't.

As for Hofstra, that is just a guess on my part. My rationale is that (a) the sub-regionals hosts normally are teams that were in a Gazelle Group event the previous year; (b) Hofstra was in the Legends Classic - a Gazelle Group event - last year; and (c) they are confirmed as being in the 2K Classic this year and are likely one of the bigger names.

Looking back at the past Gazelle Group events, the following teams played last year and have never hosted, thus making them possible hosts for this year:

- Hofstra
- Cleveland State
- Princeton
- Morehead State
- Eastern Kentucky
- Austin Peay
- Bowling Green
- South Dakota State
- Sam Houston
-----
- Akron - hosted one subregional game last year; don't know if that disqualifies them from hosting this year.
- Boston U - already has another game scheduled for probable dates of 2K subregional.
- George Washington - not in any tournament this year
- Duquesne - hosting Legends Classic game this year
- Lehigh - in preseason NIT this year

Of the teams listed above who are available to host, Hofstra and Princeton seem like the most likely. However, BU could not be in a Princeton pod UNLESS the report about a two-year home-and-home with Princeton is inaccurate.

I'd selfishly vote for Oregon State as the opener for the Bison 2K game. My sister lives in Corvalis and works for OSU. Also, Regardless the outcome of the election, The Beavers would still be coached by the First Brother-in-Law, Craig Robinson.

So it would finally put me over the edge to go to Oregon to see my sister.

Although it is a Home Rutgers Football weekend (my other fan passion) and would have to give up one of only 6 Home games this year for the Scarlet Knights.

Following up on the above, I see that Princeton is scheduled to play Rutgers on Friday 11/16 and thus presumably unavailable to host a 2K Classic sub-regional.

Also I see I did not originally put Niagara on the list. They are "confirmed" as one of the two sub-regional hosts. Of the available teams, my strong preference is still Hofstra.

I just realized that I was not thinking when I wrote the above paragraph. A team is allowed to play 27 games, plus one multi-team event. That means BU can play a total of 31 games if they so desire (27 + 4 games in the 2K Classic). With 14 PL games, that leaves a possibility of 17 ooc games. Thus there could be one more.

Given how tough the overall schedule looks, I'd vote to add a home game with a beatable team. Binghamton would fit the bill - although they also will be an RPI-killer. Norfolk State or another top MEAC team would be perfect, since they will have relatively good records (good for the RPI) but not be very strong.

With the Holy Cross schedule out, I guess that Bucknell's official schedule cannot be far behind.

HC Schedule: http://goholycross.com/sports/m-baskbl/2012- 13/sch...

BTW, Holy Cross' schedule is not that exciting, but a visit to San Francisco over Christmas break is always nice. With a trip to the west coast, I am surprised that they did not double up with a game at Santa Clara or St. Mary's.

No, not very exciting. HC fans have been having a debate over whether it's better to have a reasonably good ooc record against weak opponents or whether to play more challenging games.

http://s2.excoboard.com/Crossports/33741/2352 911

Playing BC, Providence, and St John's seems challenging- based on their leagues and history. But St Johns and BC probably will be fairly weak, and Providence, although better, will not be a powerhouse. One issue with the HC schedule, however, is not enough games with good teams below the BCS-conference level. They do play Harvard and ODU, but that is it. The other ten games are against weak-to-average opponents. BU's schedule at the moment only has three teams at that level (St Francis, Marist, and Dartmouth) and will likely pick up one more in the 2K.

As for BU's schedule release date, one hold-up is the 2K Classic. Ghe Gazelle Group controls when the matchups and dates are made public - and that has not happened yet. A few days ago they released the opponents/dates of the "final four" for this event, so hopefully the subregional schedule will be released soon. When that happens, I expect the official BU release shortly thereafter.

I am glad others around the league are recognizing how the Holy Cross schedule really has been watered down. If you look at the 2010-11 schedule and compare it to the 2012-13, it really is staggering to see the difference in level of competition.

In my opinion, Milan Brown understands the need to pick up wins. It should come as no mystery that there were a combined 6 teams from the CAA, MAAC, and A10 on the 2010-11 schedule, and only 1 team from these conferences in 2012-13.

The OOC slate in Milan Brown's first season was actually pretty damn good: Charleston, Harvard, BC, UMASS, Wake Forest, Stony Brook, Fairfield, Hofstra, St. Joe's, George Washington among others.

Basically, you have replaced UMass, Fairfield, Hofstra, St. Joe's, and GW with Maine, Columbia, Dartmouth, UNH, and Hartford. A real shame.

On another note, I am extremely envious of Bucknell's slate this season. The Kent State game is a fantastic team to get for a home and home.

All games at 7pm. Guess it's quality over quantity. 12 home games total. Interesting that the women have 7 ooc home games and 14 total home games.

One positive thing is that three of the ooc games - the first three - take place when students are on campus - as opposed to one last year. All are Tuesday night games, however, which is not ideal for me. LaSalle is a Saturday game and then Marist is on Wednesday.

A NYC basketball blog that is likely reliable reports that BU will be playing Columbia this year. Presumably this year's game is at Columbia, meaning the Lions would visit Sojka next year.

http://nycbuckets.com/2012/08/columbia-prep aring-f...

Columbia returns almost their entire team, plus a 2011 starter who was injured last year, so they should be improved - perhaps battling for the Ivy 4th spot. Hopefully the Bison will play a lot better in this game than the last time they journeyed to Levien.

Loyola game is on Friday December 28th, per their schedule.

http://www.loyolagreyhounds.com/sports/m-baskbl/sp...

Edit: St. Francis also announced their ooc schedule, with BU visiting on December 17th, the middle of three games in five days.

Putting together what we now know, the schedule looks like this:

_________________________ ____________________

Out of Conference (16 games):

Nov 9 or 11: 2K Classic Opener: at Purdue, Alabama, Villanova, OR Oregon State

November 13: George Mason (HOME)

November 16-18 : 2K Classic Sub-regional - 3 games, at either Niagara or Hofstra

November 23: at Penn State

November 27: Dartmouth (HOME)

December 4: Kent State (HOME)

December 15: LaSalle (HOME)

December 17: at St. Francis (PA)

December 19: Marist (HOME)

December 28: at Loyola (MD)

January 2: at Cornell

Other road games: at Missouri, at Princeton, at Columbia.

The above shows 16 games, which would leave room for one more if BU wanted to go to the NCAA max. Last year they played one less than the allowable 31. One rumored game last month was Harvard, but I have seen no confirmation of that.

No confirmation yet, but indications are the 2K opener will be at Purdue, and the 2K round robin(3 games) will be at Niagra.

Thanks. I had also heard Niagara from someone at Bucknell. Was hoping for Hofstra.

I am expecting at least one of the 2K Classic pods to have a D2/D3 team in it. Looking back, it appears that the Gazelle Group always announces the brackets by mid-August if the teams are set. The fact that there has been no notice leads me to believe that they have been looking for a D1 team to round out the field and failed - which would mean bringing in a D2/D3 team similar to West Alabama last year. The announcement last year for the Legends was on August 25th, btw, with the delay presumably being due to Buffalo pulling out and a new team (i.e. West Alabama) being solicited for the Bucknell pod. This year's Legends, btw, has an all-D1 field, which was announced on August 6th.

Snappy, indeed. It'll make a fine start to the team's film pre-tourney film session.

If we open at Purdue, it'll be our second year opening on a court with a raised floor.

Not the most powerful insight, but hey, it's the off-season.

Niagara's arena is, to be most charitable, cozy, though it gets a decent crowd, but there's nothing good I can say about Niagara Falls, NY. If you need diversion, bring your passport and go to Niagara Falls, Ontario, across the river. And that's the only place that gives you a view of the Falls.

Assuming a couple of the unconfirmed reports are correct, here is what the schedule looks like at the moment:

Out of Conference (16 games):

Nov 9 (Fri) or 11 (Sun): 2K Classic Opener: at Purdue.

November 13 (Tuesday): George Mason (HOME)

November 16-18 (Fri-Sun) : 2K Classic Sub-regional - 3 games, at Niagara.

November 23 (Fri): at Penn State

November 27 (Tue): Dartmouth (HOME)

December 1 (Sat): at Columbia

December 4 (Tue): Kent State (HOME)

December 15 (Sat): LaSalle (HOME)

December 17 (Mon): at St. Francis (PA)

December 19 (Wed): Marist (HOME)

December 28 (Fri): at Loyola (MD)

January 2 (Wed): at Cornell

January 5 (Sat): at Missouri

TBD: at Princeton and possibly one other game.

There are several available spots where games could still be scheduled. Saturday December 22nd seems likely, maybe the Princeton game. Also, with a week between the Missouri game and the PL opener, it is certainly possible we could see a game on Tuesday or Wednesday, although that is far from certain. Not likely but possible: Wednesday November 21st.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

PL Games:

1/12 (Sat) Army
1/16 at Colgate
1/19 (Sat) Lafayette
1/23 Lehigh
1/26 (Sat) at Holy Cross
1/30 at American
2/2 (Sat) Navy
2/9 (Sat) at Army
2/13 Colgate
2/16 (Sat) at Lafayette
2/20 at Lehigh
2/23 (Sat) Holy Cross
2/27 American
3/2 (Sat) at Navy
3/6 (Wed) PL quarter-final
3/9 (Sat) PL semi-final
3/13 (Wed) PL final
2012-13 Attendance: 19 games and 8,354 miles driven.

Other than the host, do we have any idea of which teams are playing at Niagara?

No. The only other team I've seen (other than Hofstra, who is hosting the other pod) is South Dakota State. I'm certain at least one of the pods will get stuck with a D2/D3 team. Hope it's not the one BU is in.

The Princeton game is confirmed for Saturday December 22nd - 7 PM - in Jadwin.

Princeton, btw, has just embarked on a 10-day trip to Spain, one where their incoming frosh may be allowed to play (depending on whether they took a summer course). Should help them this year. They are allowed to take a long trip at this time because their classes do not begin until September 13th.

Three cheers for colleges that play their games in "gymnasiums."

I haven't been to Jadwin yet. It sure looks like my kinda joint---just look at those glorious bleachers!

That is perfect. We are talking about flying to Philadelphia for Christmas. So, a little trip up to Princeton might have to happen.

137, the following must be read the way that Homer Simpson says, "Donuts."

Ooooooh, that sounds good.

That might have to happen. Would I get double points on the BRW Travel Scale for hitting two games in different states?

Yes, indeed...on top of the BRW bonus points for supporting the team on the road!

For even more points, make it a 10-day holiday visit and see games in three states: Marist (at Sojka), Princeton, and Loyola.
