Holy Cross must be thrilled. With a total of 9 schools, is it possible we are looking for 1 more? Maybe a more southern school?

I'm sure more will follow. Other America East schools, such as UNH and Maine, have to be interested - with their main league sinking and their football league (CAA) in turmoil.

I'd love either, but I can't see Richmond joining. Possibly William & Mary - which would be a great addition but not one I'm overly optimistic about. Prior to the CAA's problems, I thought it was very unlikely but now it at least looks possible.

Football aside, this is a home run. Great overall athletic program with a men's basketball team that would have made the league stronger in nine of the last ten years (with the tenth being a wash). And perhaps best of all, HC fans can now stop whining about not having a local rival.
As to W&M, I think our chances are good as soon as either JMU (to FBS) or George Mason (to wherever) bolts. It's one thing to leave a league containing five of your state's public colleges (GMU, VCU, W&M, JMU, ODU). It's another altogether when you're one of two.

One thought on Boston U. I wonder how the PL's academic index will affect their recruiting. For example, their top recruit this year, Philly PG Maurice Watson, reportedly had an SAT score that made it impossible for Penn or Bucknell to continue recruiting him, even though he had made unofficial visits to both schools.

Per previous discussion here, I thought football was the main driver of the league's appetite for expansion. So what's this move all about??

I wonder if this means there might be PL wrestling down the road. Bucknell, Lehigh, American, Army, Navy, and Boston U all have wrestling teams - which is enough for a league.

Bottom line is that everything just got much tougher in the Patriot League. I know this is basketball, but if you look at other sports, its gonna be tough now...
Men's Basketball -- Went 12-4 in the America East. Would say they are a decent program and probably would finish third-fourth???
Women's Basketball -- Went 15-1 in the AEast. Beat champion Navy by two at their place.
Women's Soccer -- Went 19-3-1, have been to seven straight NCAAs and ranked in the top 15 this year.
Men's Soccer -- Traditionally has been a strong program. Went 9-9 this year, reaching the AEast semifinals.
Women's Lacrosse -- Went 11-6 and had won six straight AEast titles before Albany won this year.
Men's Lacrosse -- Starting up in 13-14, and I imagine they will become a strong program. Lots of money being put into program.
MSwimming -- 1st in AEast
WSwimming -- 1st in AEast
Softball -- Was 41-16 this year and won a game at the NCAA Regionals.
Field Hockey -- Went 11-9 last year, falling to 10th-ranked New Hampshire in AEast finals.
Men's Tennis -- Not terribly strong.
Women's Tennis -- Went 6-14, but did beat eight-time champion Army, 7-0, in the first match of the season.
MXC -- Second in AEast (lost by tiebreaker)
WXC -- SEcond in AEast
MT&F -- Third in AEast
WT&F -- Second in AEast
Do not have volleyball, baseball or football.
PL teams will have their hands full.

If the league stays at 9, do you think the league basketball schedule will go up to 16 games? I would imagine an 8/9 seed play-in game for the league tournament.

Definitely a 16-game schedule. No other way to do it.
I would imagine an 8/9 first-round game, but not sure how to do it. Play it at seed 8 two nights before the quarterfinals??? Move the schedule to Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday, Wednesday?
Move it to a neutral site and that takes care of it.

Good get for the league. Fits academically. Gives Holy Cross a close rival. Makes things tougher in hoops though.

I move for no PL tourney for teams finishing 9th! (And not to start a diversion from the thread, but I'd be happy to say only the top 6 qualify).

It would have to be way down the road. I can't imagine Lehigh -- or, given it's recent successes, American -- wanting to leave the EIWA.

I definitely agree no team would have any interest in departing the EIWA. I was thinking more of an arrangement like the Ivy League has - where their teams compete in the EIWA but also have a complete Ivy League schedule and award an Ivy championship based on the results of all the duals. That would probably be easy to arrange - especially since a lot of teams already wrestle each other anyway. The Bison, for example, already wrestle duals vs Lehigh, Army, and American.

This is great news! Also, it should help to appease the HC Faithful who refer to the PL as the Pennsylvania League.
I would love to see either W&M or Richmond join to make it 10 teams. Yes, it would create travel issues, but they are both schools that would fit both academically and athletically with the PL.

This is going to confuse me. When I was in college "BU" meant Boston U., and only Boston U, and I can't remember anyone referring to Bucknell as "BU," but as its commonly used on this board to mean Bucknell, I've gotten used to it. Now what do I do?
As for BU's, meaning Boston U.'s, entry toughening up the competition, it might not be quite so threatening. While its academic standards across the board, per BRW's post, are PL-ish, that doesn't mean that it has in the past been recruiting athletes subject to the same standards. Recruiting subject to the AI might be another matter entirely. As 137 has pointed out with regard to Maurice Watson, Boston has had more flexibility with respect to grades and scores. Over time, the AI should be something of a leveler.
