Oberfeld is definitely playing football again. I had hoped he would just concentrate on hoops this year, as Ben Brackney did a few years ago.

I understand why he would want to play football, but I have to admit that with Bucknell committing to invest roughly $220,000 in his future, I am not entirely comfortable with his decision. Just out of interest, if he got hurt playing football, what are Bucknell's options regarding his scholarship?

If he gets hurt before signing date (Mid-November), BU could theoretically withdraw their offer. However I seriously doubt they would do that - unless he had agreed not to play football when he committed.

If a kid gets a hoops scholarship, and gets hurt playing football (to the extent that he could no longer play bsktball), it beats me why the school would be obligated to honor the scholarship. Actually, what puzzles me more, is why a school would give such a scholarship without the condition that the kid not play FB.

I was thinking more of an injury that was serious (say a torn ACL) but not career-ending. If a player could no longer play basketball, NCAA rules allow a school to give him a scholarship but not have it count against the 13-scholarship limit. To me, the school's obligation should partly be determined by what was agreed upon when the player committed.

BTW, the day RJ Evans committed to Holy Cross he quit football - right in the middle of the season. That decision upset a number of people in Norwich since they were undefeated at the time and RJ was a good option QB. Right after he left the team, they dropped two games they would have won had he still been there - and saw their chance of playing in States evaporate. I don't know if his scholarship was dependent on dropping football, but I definitely don't like the idea of a player quitting on a team in midseason, especially if he is their QB.

I understand the injury concerns, especially if you have already commited resources. But I also get why a high school athlete would want to play another sport he/she loves. Considering this player has not begun his college career, it seems the player has far more to lose than the basketball program. Ultimately it is his decision and we cannot forget that these are still high school kids. You only get one chance to do many things in life and I don't necessarily blame him for wanting to experience his last shot at something he obviously loves. Of course there is a risk, but it is one he has decided he wants to take. And it is apparent that Bucknell put in no stipulations about quitting football.
Actually, I have to say that I kind of like that he is a decent football player. Bucknell could use some inside strength and toughness, and it seems to me that this player has that.

I would think that this is Ben's dilemma, if a dilemma at all. I hope he has a great year all around.

Western Bison, I agree with you. It is completely his decision provided that Bucknell did not stipulate that he cannot play football. As I stated above, I understand why he would want to play football. It is a great sport and lots of fun to play. But . . .

In addition, it appears that he is one of the captains of the football team.

As many know, it's a pretty big deal for a kid to be captain of a varsity sport in high school...
