Is this just bad for Cornell, or bad for the Ivies as well?

And the dominoes start to fall. Hopefully Cressler did Cornell a favor by the AD realizing they have to fire Courtney and hire Donahue now

Donahue will make $1M+ per year to sit on his butt for the next two years. Is Cornell going to match that?

Chip, would anyone have to match that? The contract is only good if he doesn't coach anywhere? If so, he won't be going to Penn, either.

Interesting point. Although, he can probably get Bruce Pearl's old gig at ESPN, right?

Didn't realize that is how those contracts usually work, no one is going to pay him near that though

That's why I suggested me may work in broadcasting as an analyst, because it probably doesn't violate his contract. I could be wrong, though.

My understanding of coaching contracts is that they only get voided if you take another coaching job. Turns out Donahue has two years left on his deal.

I of course would have to read the contract, but unless college contracts are different from pro contracts, the school that fires a coach is responsible for paying the difference between the contracted salary and the new salary. I don't believe they get out of the contract unless there is something akin to a restrictive covenant, which I have never seen in this type of contract. But without seeing the contract, this is only a guess.

Just by way of illustration, this is from the Wikipedia article on Mike Shanahan, who was just fired by the 'Skins:

"Redskins owner Daniel Snyder fired Shanahan on December 30, 2013. The team finished 3-13 in the 2013 season, and was in last place in the NFC East division 3 of 4 seasons. Shanahan would have had a $7M salary for 2014, what would have been his last year on his contract. If Shanahan is able to find another coaching job, the new salary is deducted from his $7M, the difference is paid by Redskins.[20]"

palestra38, I think that's the standard coaching contract and I can't imagine Steve's deal at BC being any different. But, like you, I haven't read it and so don't know for certain.

It's not good for the league if a player with Nolan's talent leaves, but all it really means is the league's worst team won't get much better.

Cornell is going to need one of their freshman to step up, or a ton of the Robert Hatter Experience, to have any deep threat next season.

Actually, I meant someone who was a credible three point shooter. Hatter is the best returning three point shooter (34.7%) and he was streaky as anything. The "hot hand" may be a myth, but 80% of his makes came in literally five games.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cornell won more than five games next year, and I'm pretty down on the program. Five wins isn't very hard. Only three D1 teams failed to win that many.

I wonder how many people (at Cornell and elsewhere) have him on auto-dial?

You'd think if Miller was going to transfer, that he would have done last year -- so his mandatory year off coincided with his recuperation. Can't imagine he wants two full years off.

Word on his recuperation was understandably quiet. From Barry and Eric's broadcasts, he seemed to be back practicing with the team.

I would think that if he transfers now, he could ask for the waiver of the one-year break, yes? Since I am assuming he didn't participate in any team activities this year?

If there is no scholarships in IVY play why does one have to sit at all? It's not like he received any special privileges? Seems unfair to the player's of IVY ball that they are subject to same NCAA rules scholarship athletes are at other schools.

I guess you can always apply for a waiver and won't hazard a guess as to how the NCAA chooses to grant them. I didn't see a mention of this exception in the NCAA's printed transfer rules, but that's probably not dispositive.

My understanding is that he had started to practice with the team, but certainly did not play in any game or scrimmage.

Practicing with the team could be an issue for getting a fifth year of eligibility.

If the Ivy League does not give "athletic scholarships" why did Cressler need a "release?" I thought student-athletes in the Ivy League did not need to obtain a "release" to transfer to another school. Am I mistaken?

Varsity athletes do need a release, I gather. Max Hooper got a release 2 years ago, sat out one year at St. Johns, and played this past season. I'm sure there are other examples people can cite.

You may be thinking of National Letters of Intent, which the Ivies and service academies don't use. Sign one of those and if the school does not release the you when you enroll somewhere else you lose a year of eligibility and must sit out a season.

Wow. So, not counting the one-year sitting out time at St. Johns, that makes 6 schools in 6 years for this well-traveled young man:

Jr. year in NorCal
Sr. year at Mater Dei
Post Grad year at Brewster
Freshman year at Harvard
RS Sophomore year at St. Johns
Next year, wherever...

I remember that Hooper, like a number of other BB players, prides himself in his large and catalogued shoe collection. Perhaps a metaphor for all the places he's been!

You're kidding about Rutgers, right? I'm a little slow on the uptake sometimes.

That's OK. You know, with all the schools he's attended, it'd be easy to toss Rutgers in there as well.

Some Nolan Cressler news. He has signed a contract to play with KK Dynamic of the Basketball League of Serbia. Last year, was in Estonia where he play in the Baltic League for Avis Utilitas Rapla.

Estonia seems to be agreeing with him (or at least his basketball game).
