Ben Spiva was a very good player in the 80's, who I believe transferred out. And we thought Schneider was a bad coach - he looks like John Wooden now.
But you're right - I've been following Penn basketball even longer (since 1958), and the current situation with the program is an absolute disgrace. For all of the points you raised and more, a whole house cleaning is needed, for as long as it takes, starting right now.

Well it doesn't sound like that's happening. I mean what are Penn fans left to do? I can't really go through another year of palestra38 touting mike rice every week (jk p38). And I'd love to be optimistic, maybe that's the route to go. Hicks and DNH could be all ivy next year. PLP showed some nice signs his freshman year. I have no idea about the current freshman, what do people think about M. Howard? If only we had some recruits to be excited about - but everyone is saying we shouldn't be excited about them. *massive sigh*

A good coach makes all the difference. I'm not saying that a new coach can come in and win championships right away, but with this current nucleus, a good coach could at least make it fun to go to the Palestra again (as long as we don't have to look at sourpuss Bilsky there).

I am happy that Old Bear & Bruno come on the Penn boards. Their comments are thoughtful and never snarky. They have supported their team through almost all thick. Now that their program seems to be on the upswing with a very good young coach whom we had they could be expected to talk some trash & they don't. Like H78 and unlike some of the other H & P posters they bring interesting comments to the Penn board.

It's all OK. I get yelled at occasionally on the PU and CU boards for commenting---but in general, opposing voices are accepted. Frankly, given where we are, there is nothing that they could say that would bother me. It's all true.

I know. But it's easier to take measured comment than snarky gloating from fans of programs who didn't show up on these boards or at their high school sized dumpy gyms until we fell and they rose.

1. Am I the only one who has a problem with Brown posters being active in substantive Penn threads? I really don't want people who don't have Penn's best interests chiming in with their thoughts. As much as I can't stand Jeff2sf, at least i know he wants what's best for the program. I can't say that about the Brown guys who live on this board (and not their own).
2. In regards to Harrell and Brooks, why are all these dots being connected that they were asked to leave?
As to 1) - OB, Bruno, and even you PU guys: Don't pay any attention to this. The more voices the better and we reserve the right the subject your boards to our opinions.
As to 2) - Agreed. We should not let the ambiguity of the DP article let us jump to conclusions, especially since the true reason for those specific departures should not be relevant to us.

I really look forward to being able to go over to the other schools' boards and talk some smack.
Someday.

Snark is easy.
Measured criticism or even empathy (because chances are, at some point virtually every program will be in the dumps) is hard.

Old Bear, what are your sources to confirm this? Before everyone ridicules me for conspiracy theories, understand that my friend who was on that team in the same class does not remember her - and is very surprised by that. It's not enough to make me assert that she wasn't - but it does make me want to see more information when others assert she was.

Classy, tguru, attacking a kid's performance in the classroom based on conjecture from unnamed sources. Keep up the good work.

That kid is almost 30 years old now. I doubt he's worrying what anyone on a message board thinks about his life a dozen years ago.
