That 2.5 star would be higher if they counted the 4 star rating from ESPN. It should probably be a composite above a 3 star.
Looks like Harvard and Princeton have also offered him
He would be huge for us.

From City of Basketball Love:

These guys are both 2016-

"–Neumann-Goretti has had Division I guards every year, and now it’s Vaughn Covington‘s turn. The high-academic, defensively specialist point guard with a nice 3-point stroke has heard from La Salle, Towson, Colgate, Penn, Holy Cross and Lehigh so far.

–Penn has offered a pair of point guards in Covington, a Team Final product, and Germantown Academy’s Devon Goodman, who plays his AAU ball with Team Philly."

After narrowly escaping their first two games on Wednesday night, the Middlesex Magic returned to Competitive Edge Athletic Complex to score three more wins on Thursday and capture the Hoop Group Summer Classic East championship.

Jackson Donahue averaged over 24 points per game in the five wins while he and Collin McManus both attracted their future teammates from the UPenn basketball team to come out and support their efforts in the championship game.

Neither player disappointed as Donahue went off for 36 points in the final while McManus anchored the defense with 15 boards.

Penn: “My godfather Jerome Allen coaches there, and it’s one of the better academic schools in the country, and they got a great commitment in Jake Silpe and Jule Brown. Their 2015 class is looking good.”

Based on online videos Soffer has range out to the NBA 3 point line. Looks to have a solid build which bodes well for being able to match up favorably at the wing. Would be a real nice get as this is the type of skill set you need to recruit in today's Ivy League.

Strange set of schools, especially for a San Diego kid. East coast connection perhaps? Should be gettable given that school list unless the finances don't work.

Not so strange. Looks like one of his concerns is which city he wants to spend his time in -- Boston, NYC, Baltimore, or Philly. If I'm right, your chances are pretty slim.

Not to mention that Commonwealth Ave isn't as cozy as Cambridge and the BU campus isn't much. Loyola also lacks charm.

In the end Penn has to hope this is not a dollars and cents decision or a bb conference decision, because there isn't much competition in terms of optics or academics.

You obviously haven't spent much time in our city lately. I spent the better part of Monday visiting my daughter in Franklintown and I'd venture to say there were about 90-100 thousand young people on the Parkway and throughout that would disagree with your sarcasm/cynicism.

Truly, Philadelphia is getting younger and more vibrant every day. The remarkable thing now is that young people want to live in the City and the morning traffic (I live in Mt Airy so commute inbound) is heavier outbound than inbound. This would have been unheard of 20 years ago.

Hey... No need to take pot shots at the town of Princeton. As a long-time resident, it's important to separate out the town from the University. It's a great place to live, despite the fact that a majority of the population is in opposition to my conservative sensibilities... I'd be happy to take anyone on a personalized tour of the town, which includes: Albert Einstein's house, Brooke Shields' apartment when she attended Princeton, Grover Cleveland & Aaron Burr's grave, and the restaurant that Eric & Lyle Menendez owned prior to murdering their parents.

My personalized tour can begin and end at that ice cream shop in town assuming it's still there. Unless you want to throw in a side trip to Grovers Mill.

Hey, I live not that far from Princetown. I'm old enough to remember when it was almost rural before the Rt 1 corridor growth - well before they opened the brew pub so there is at least one place tolerable to hang out before strolling over to the airplane hangar for a game.

So yes, it's a kind of OK Trenton suburb with all the charm of at least 50 other Jersey towns. Plus it comes with the added bonus of insufferable students and alums dressed in halloween colors every day of the year. If you're into that.

I'll admit it's probably a step up from Rider's campus in Lawrenceville.

Hey--don't take it seriously. I often take day trips to your fine town. It indeed is a nice place and, if I liked the suburban lifestyle, that is as nice a town as any. Some decent restaurants, a great record store and Terhune nearby. Oh, yeah, a leafy campus as well.

SM, that's exactly what I mean.

Westfield, Ridgewood, Red Bank, Morristown, New Brunswick, Millburn, Whitehouse Station, Flemington - take your pick. Jersey is teaming with these sort of towns.

Back to Soffer - if ambiance is a significant part of his criteria then my hopes are high.

Have you been to New Brunswick lately? Maybe not as bucolic as Princeton but it's on the upswing. Underrated restaurant scene, good watering holes, even a theatre. All in a college town.

Actually seven students were infected between March of 2013 and November of that same year. It was so bad that the CDC was considering an experimental vaccine for the entire campus. So was the anthrax incident before or after that? Must have made for some interesting Q&A at orientation.

Is there a particular reason why the new Freshmen men basketball players have not been added to the team list on the Men's Basketball roster page of Penn Athletics? The semester has already started. Have all six begun classes?

The new Freshmen and transfer Women basketball players were added to their roster some time ago.

I think that, in the past, those names were not added until (official) practice starts and we see who shows up. Keep in mind, too, that the women had the Italy trip - not sure if this is addition of names to the women's roster is consistent with past practice.

According to the write-ups on PA, the women played all three of their originally-scheduled opponents, and on the originally-scheduled days. They played by European rules, and won two out of their three games.

So then, it seems that The Quad's post on 7/2 about the sixth recruit never took root?

"Along with this year’s recruits Mike Auger, Sam Jones, Dan Dwyer, Darnell Foreman, and Antonio Woods, all of whom have been discussed here, there is apparently another recruit named Shawn Simmons from Norfolk Academy in Virginia. Anyone know much about him?"

Sounds like whenever the roster comes, then we'll have the official list.

I'll give you 100 to 1 odds he won't be taking his talents to West Philly.

Me too. Those are very very long odds. The G-dfather needs to place his hands on the young man's shoulders and reel him in.

The mounting circumstantial evidence makes this possibility extremely unlikely. I think he threw Jerome a bone by putting Penn in the Final 6.

I realize we have a tendency to go overboard with recruiting highlight videos but has anyone seen any of the Shawn Simmons stuff? My computer is misbehaving so if anyone wants to upload some it should prove for more stimulating conversation than urinating on the program. Of which btw I'm as guilty as the next person.

I agree that I wouldn't bet on Alston, although I'd probably take 100 to 1. That said, if there was such a thing as a true crystal ball, I wouldn't doubt that Penn has better than equal odds of being the best choice for his future when compared with the other schools on his list. I'm not trying to be an academic elitist/snob. People can succeed many ways. But Penn does give well above average future employment opportunities for people who aren't sure to play in the NBA.

No better example of that than Alston's godfather. Things look pretty tough right now, but they also looked incredibly bad when Jerome made his commitment. It was the start of great things.

Penn Pal,

There's this:

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1192401/highl ights/122...

I'm not a fan of highlight reels but this one is kind of interesting. Simmons has hops.

Do we know if he really is a recruit though?

Am very interested in your opinion on Foreman btw.

There's a Shawn Simmons, class of 2015 at Loris, SC HS. He says he wants to study medicine. He's a 5'10" PG, which seems perfect for us.

Mad hops as the kids say. Didn't see much of a perimiter game though. I'd still like to see some confirmation that he's actually a recruit.

I saw Foreman once only because they were playing Life Center Academy and it was close to home. I had no idea who he was prior to that and even less idea that were were involved.

What I saw was impressive considering they were pretty much playing three against five all day. He's a lefty that can get to the rim and has a nice pull up jumper from distance. He also, and here's where we should be especially pleased, is a natural leader that makes everyone around him better. Stop me if you've heard this too much but he seems to see the court very well. Btw they lost by 14 and it wasn't that close. Not sure of his numbers but he was not overmatched.

Your comments exactly match those of the people I talked too who saw all of Foreman's tournament games.

Here's a bit more info on Dalton Soffer.

Seton Hall offered him after an unofficial visit in August.

http://www.southorangejuice.com/2014/8/28/6078013/...

Note it was an unofficial, meaning the family had to pay. Hopefully that means financials won't be a deal breaker.

Seton Hall is making a house visit on the 24th. BU and Loyola already visited. I can't find anything about a Penn visit.

Seton Hall already has a more touted incoming freshman and is going after bigger fish with their scholarships so I'm not getting their interest.

Dalton Soffer reopened his recruitment. He's visiting Seton Hall. No clue if Penn will be involved again or if this is a done deal for SHU.
