Was he the coach when Lehigh made the tournament with Cj McCollum? Did he recruit McCollum?

Just to play devil's advocate, he's been 14-18 and 16-14 the last 2 years

He impressed me during that time Penn played in some sort of tournament at Lehigh a few years ago (the exploding pen technical?). However, his teams seem average without McCollum. I had high hopes for him, but his results seem no better than Donahue without Foote, et al.
If we're going to mine the Patriot League, we may as well as get their best coach - Bucknell's Dave Paulsen. But I have a feeling his next move is a higher level than ours.

Reed started under McCaffery at UNC Greensboro. He was an assistant at Lehigh for 5 seasons prior to taking over at the start of the 2007 season.
At 42, he is one of the younger coaches in Division I.
In his 8 years at Lehigh, he had 4 seasons with McCollum (or 3+ due to his injury in his senior year) and 4 without.
With McCollum, Reed was 86-43 (44-19 Patriot League) with one 1st, two 2nd, and one 4th place finish. There were three post-season appearances (two NCAA and one CBI).
In the four seasons without McCollum (seasons 1,2,7,8 at Lehigh), Reed was 59-61 (29-35 Patriot) with two 3rd, a fifth, and a sixth place finish. There were zero post-season appearances.
From what I can see, Reed was considered for the LSU job after the 2012 season (following the NCAA win over Duke). He was also a more serious candidate for the Northwestern job after the 2013 season.
With his youth, his experiences in the Patriot League & PA basketball and his recruitment of McCollum, there are reasons to consider him. However, his non-McCollum and recent results do not appear to make his a serious candidate if the goal is to make it to the top of the Ivy League.

Interesting. Those Lehigh teams were fun to watch. See folks points about results without McCollum. Haven't seem much since though.
Bison - I'm sure you've seen him much closer. Any thoughts on him as a coach and recruiter?

My opinion. Very good recruiter. So-so coach. His Lehigh team this year was largely freshmen and sophs - so LU is set up for good seasons the next two years. Barring transfers, either LU or Bucknell will be the preseason Patriot League favorite next year.
As for Paulsen, he and his family are very happy in Lewisburg, with its small-town environment and low cost of living, and it would take an unbelievable offer to gain his interest. His roots are very much small town, having played his college ball at Williams and also having coached in Williamstown for nine years. Also three years at St. Lawrence prior to Williams. He was brought up in small-town Wisconsin.

You make Paulsen sound like he's going to be another Bob McKillop. Good for him. Lewisburg is nice town.

I surprised that there has been no mention of Will Brown who has taken Albany to 3 straight NCAA bids.

Yeah I know someone just started another thread OB, but when I saw they won 3rd straight time I thought that too. Seems like he REALLY depends on international recruiting though.

Who was the "star recruit" for Penn in the Barry Pierce/Will McAlister class. He never played for Penn.

I don't recall anyone in that class who fits your criteria. As I recall, in addition to McAllister and Pierce, that class included only Will Brown, Dan Purdy, Joe Warden and Ken Hans. The other newcomer on that 1990-91 team was Mike Milobsky, but he was a transfer from Tufts. (The Rob Hodgson debacle wouldn't be until five years later.)

That was my point Otto, even though I probably worded it awkwardly. Will Brown (the current Albany coach who was touted as a potential HC candidate) was our star recruit that year...he never played for Penn and spent half his time playing pool in the Quad.

My bad. I imagined there was a question mark, which apparently wasn't there.
Many years later, Fran Dunphy said about Will Brown, "I think if Will had given it a little more time and decided Penn was the right situation for him, he would have in his junior and senior year been a significant part of what we were doing.".
