They will host Hofstra on Thursday, time TBA. Interesting matchup; Sagarin has us at +5 or +6 on our home floor. They're very young; no seniors at all, and they generally start three sophomores and a freshman. It looks like they rely on the inside game; their 3-pt shooting is horrible (under 27%), but they have two tall women and two guards who are all shooting over 46%. Stipanovich and Nwokedi will have to work extra hard in this one. Common opponents: both beat NJIT on the road, us by a much bigger score; on the other hand, they split with Drexel, with the win on the road. They also seem to have more variance than we do; on the one hand, they beat James Madison, who is way better than anyone we took out; on the other hand, they lost to two sub-200 teams in Sagarin, the latter in the last game of the regular season (we lost to one, Lafayette, but that was early in the season, before Nwokedi was starting and Ross improved.) Definitely a winnable game, but not a gimme. If they do get past that, the next game would most likely be a rematch with Temple, who is playing Marist.

Great to see the Palestra host some post-season basketball.
What are the chances Amy Gutmann attends?

Game time at 7 pm on Thursday. Doesn't appear at the moment that it's going to be on ILDN, unfortunately.

Poor, I'd say. I can't remember ever seeing her at a women's game, even last year's Ivy clincher, which she would have had three reasons to go to:
1.) It was her old stomping grounds.
2.) It was a good thing for Penn women.
3.) It was a good thing for Penn sports.

The women played pretty well on Thursday. In particular, they shot the lights out from 3-point land, at 9/14. Pretty tough to beat them when they do that. You can also see why Hofstra has such high variance: they have a very athletic center with a lot of great moves, and they have a shooting guard who can catch and shoot with great accuracy, which is rare in the women's game. Those two had 38 between them. They also have a tough, aggressive defense, which made the game more interesting at the end then it should have been, when they pressed us down from a 12-point lead to 3 with about 1:30 to go. However, they commit a lot of turnovers (Penn was actually winning the turnover battle easily before Hofstra started pressing) and their free-throw shooting was horrible at 5/13. Nwokedi and Roche led the way with 16 and 13; Stipanovich had 12, including a couple of big jumpers late (one to beat the shot clock), as well as breaking the Ivy postseason team block record with 8 (yes, I said team ;)) and in general keeping things contained inside the lane.
So--Sunday, SUNDAY, SUNDAY! Live, from the historIC PALESTRA! One afternoon only, it's the rematch--PENN VS. TEMPLE! Game starts at 2 and will again be on ILDN. I think both teams are playing better than they were before; Temple went 12-7 in one of the better conferences in the country, so it should be another tough one. I have to say that the first time we played them, they shot badly both from the field and the line, and while we obviously had something to do with the first, they also missed a lot of bunnies. On the other hand, Nwokedi wasn't starting then, either. Bonenberger started on Thursday, but aggravated the knee after about 5 minutes and did not return, so I don't think we can expect a lot of her tomorrow.

It's on ESPN3 FWIW. Free throws and o-boards killing Penn. Down 1 with 1 to go.

2 VERY questionable calls, one with Penn down only 1 which resulted in 2 free throws after a drive where the Temple guard wasn't touched and then another on a corner trap down 3 where they forced a turnover and much to Mike's dismay, they called Penn for a foul. Fitzgerald on Temple hit 8 free throws in a row I believe to ice it. Frustrating end to a fairly positive season.

Penn should have won this game. To Temple's credit, they made their free throws at the end, and we didn't.
Good game. Was very impressed with the Women's play. The Men's team could learn a lot from from them about teamwork, passing the ball and shooting. A very fine season for the ladies, overall.

Yes. Also add moving without the ball--there were some fine passes to cutters who finished well.

Another nice touch was that after the game ended, the team stayed on the court and sang the "Red & Blue" along with the fans. Good show, ladies!

Good show. Maybe women put two in the NCAAs before the men. Next year should be a good Ivy race.

Agreed on that.
Princeton's first NCAA game showed how under-seeded your team was. You should have been a 3 or 4 seed. Best of luck tonight.

They have done that all year. It shows how much Mike McLaughlin gets it. Hopefully, he stays at Penn for the rest of his career.

Well, I have to say that while they have indeed improved their interior passing greatly this year, in general, saying they look better than the men at moving the ball says more about the men than the women. Temple's defenders were in our players' shorts pretty much all game, and they just were not able to move the ball effectively or get good shots consistently. The outside game suffered in particular; Roche was only 1-2, and Busch didn't get any threes. While they're both great spot shooters, they can't create their own shots that often. (Hopefully, some of the players coming in next year will help with that.) The key stretch, in retrospect, was the very beginning; Temple took 7.5 minutes to get their first bucket, and yet at the end of that it was still only 7-4. That just doesn't get it done. Also, Ross and Brzozowski both reverted a bit and tried to force drives several times that had no hope. For all of that, it looked like they might pull away with about 8 to go when they went up 7, but then the Owls knocked down two threes in the next minute and picked up steam from there. It also didn't help that after going 9-10 from the line in the first half, they only went 4-10 in the second. Bonenberger's knee kept her from playing, which unfortunately denied her a perfect attendance record for her career; she had played in all of the previous 117 games during her four years.
Nevertheless, given how good Princeton was this year, I'm content with the way things worked out. Winning the Big 5 and 21 games after losing one of your best players ever and (in hindsight) a very good point guard is pretty good. Stip and Nwokedi have been the first fruits of a major upgrade in recruiting, and next year should be the first year we really start to see the difference. It will be interesting to see how their class ends up against the Tigers'. I'm optimistic, but I may be wrong.
In other news, the Big 5 awards came out, and McLaughlin repeated as Coach o' the year, while Stipanovich was first-team and Roche second. Alliya Butts of Temple did break the four-year string of Rookie of the Year awards, not for lack of trying on Nwokedi's part, though. Roche finishes as the most accurate 3-pt shooter in Penn history at almost 43%, and Stipanovich is now at 186 blocks, putting her seven away from Katarina Poulsen's Penn record and more than halfway towards the Ivy record of 305, by Columbia's Kathy Gilbert.
