Very nice pickup---apparently a summer teammate of Penn recruit Jackson Donahue.

This is a great pick-up for us. We weren't even on the recruiting sites lists to get Brodeur. He & Falzon (Northwestern over Harvard, incoming frosh) were by a lot the two leading inside scorers for NMH last year.

We spoke to Brodeur and his HS coach for the story:

I think you guys will especially like the schools he picked Penn over.

City of Basketball Love article says it came down to wanting to go Ivy (over ND, Davidson, BC & other offers) and that according to his high school coach it came down to Penn Harvard and Yale & that Donahue (the coach) was the deciding factor.

Huge example of what I mean about Harvard's early 2016 pick ups benefiting the league as a whole.

Crimson are primarily focused on a playmaking PG to close out the 2016 class. It's already too big to take some of the prospects in which it had showed earlier interest. Any time an Ivy nabs kids who weren't solely or mostly focused on the Ivy, that increases the pool and allows talent that had strong Ivy interest to be spread around the league.

AJ is just the first of a handful of 3-star, possible HM talents that won't end up at Harvard and will end up at other Ivies in this class.

True, although he's got to stop calling us UPenn.

Probably not on this one. He's been interested in the League for a long time and NMH has put tons of kids in the league including a bunch on the current Penn roster. My guess is that he is only one of several NMH current players who end up going Ivy.

I hear you, but I can't stand it when I hear "UPenn".

I have never met a single Quaker who has actually used that term--it's always by an outsider.

I mean, c'mon..we're not just another UConn or UMass, at least academically speaking.

Oh come on, people outside the University have called it UPenn for many years. It's nothing close in terms of noxiousnous as Seltzie and Vinnie calling us "the Quakes."

Great to hear some positive summer news.

On the UPenn topic, I think it's a good differentiator from the all-too-often mistake that Redfish referenced. Interestingly, I had a PSU intern recently tell me that often times people make the opposite mistake with her. I never thought about it from that perspective before, and it is actually worse than what we deal with.

No no - I meant that the Harvard kids who were outside the Ivy focus have led to Ivy focused targets to land with different teams. Brodeur's final decision did seem to be between a couple Ivy schools. He's a lot like an Alec Brennan last year, who had BCS offers, but really was Ivy focused.

Looks like a great first pickup for Coach Donahue and staff. Here is to hoping he has a few more cards up his sleeves because we need more where this comes from to turn things around.

Mrjames, just to be sure for when the topic inevitably comes up again. Did Penn out recruit Harvard or did Harvard back off their recruiting?

I mean, if he had been available later in the cycle and Harvard had room in its class, I'd imagine the Crimson would have been happy to have him. He should be a very good player in our league. Given a desire to commit at this moment, Harvard has to keep the space open for other targets it is actively pursuing. Hopefully that makes sense.

He's a great get for Penn and will fit Donahue's system very nicely.

Well, considering he visited H, Y and Penn in the last 3 weeks, it is safe to say H was recruiting him. Whether he had been given an offer at this point is something only the H staff and hi circle know.
