Downingtown West 2016 SG just committed to Penn.

Here's the story:

http://www.cityofbasketballlove.com/news_article/s...

Bottom line: be happy about this one. He'll be a very good player by sophomore/junior year. Averaged nearly 13 ppg and shot 47% from 3-point range on Adidas circuit.

Thanks Josh. Appreciate the good news - impressed that he was, apparently, SD's first recruiting call.

Any way to encourage his family to choose Acme over Shop-Rite for the next year, just to be safe? Or, are the Reds that far ahead?

Nice to see SD so quickly recruit a player from Philly. Well, outside Philly. Well, way outside Philly.

But it's all good.

Recruiting big guards is never a bad thing.

Here's his junior year highlight reel, by the way:

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2305359/highl ights/242...

As expected, a large number of 3-pointers. But as you can see, he's comfortable catching and shooting as well as off the bounce, and he can even pull up going left, which isn't easy to do. One thing the video doesn't show a lot of is his ability to post up smaller guards, but I guess that's not as fun for highlight reels.

16 points including three treys against the big boys of Roman. I don't know what his other numbers were but that ain't too shabby. Looks like he doesn't shy away in big games. It will be interesting to see how much better he gets during his senior year.

Btw does this kid's game remind anyone else of another Ryan that Donahue once coached?

One of my grandsons recently graduated from a Downingtown H.S. and iphoned this answer when I asked him if he knew Ryan Betley.

We went to downingtown east and he went to downingtown west but my senior year which was only his sophomore year when we played west we were up by 2 with 20 seconds left. He took the ball up, took a 3 with only 5 seconds left, it got blocked and sent behind him but he ran back got the ball and shot up another 3 from about 5 feet behind the 3 point line and made it to win the game. So I know he can shoot well even in pressure situations.

I like this answer!

I went to see them play WC East last year. Of all the games to see, that's probably not the best one....WC East is terrible.

Since Stu apparently lives in Chester County, I'm guessing it's a decision based at least in part on convenience. Josh, any word on how the local Penn recruits (Betley, Goodman) looked thus far this season? I feel like they're the kind of shooters that Donahue needs for his system to have a chance of success.

There is a nice article on Josh's web site about Ryan's game against West Chester East. Ryan scored 21 points to lead his team to victory, including his career 1000th point.

After making the landmark basket, Ryan ran into the stands to embrace his mother while play was stopped. I was not certain how the stoppage in play was arranged at a road game, but the article states that Ryan's coach called a timeout immediately after the basket.

Ryan's family unveiled a sign congratulating Ryan on "1000 Pts." The P in Pts. was designed as a red and blue colored, split P in honor of Penn.

I call your attention to Wednesday evening, December 30. The Jameer Nelson Classic is taking place over two days at Widener University. There are games beginning at 12:00 noon, but the final three games on Wednesday night are
5:15 Archbishop Carroll (Coach Paul Romanczuk) vs. St. Benedict's
7:00 Downingtown West (Ryan Betley) vs. Chester
8:45 Neumann-Goretti vs. Hudson (N.J.) Catholic

Sorry I just saw this. That West Chester East game turned out better than I thought! Haven't seen Betley play yet this season (though obviously he's been playing well), but got a glimpse of Devon Goodman against St. Joe's Prep last weekend and he played very well. He's an absolute jet of a PG, and he's becoming better at finishing some tough buckets around the rim. Not sure how perfect he'll be in Donahue's system right away as he's not a terrific outside shooter; he might struggle with some of the same things as Silpe right away, but I do think he's continually improving and should be a good piece for the Quakers by his sophomore year.

Downingtown beat Episcopal 47-45 and Chester 55-51. Anybody see a box score?

I saw that Betley had 17 in one of the games - I think it was against Chester. Can't remember the other but I think he was either in high teens or low 20s.

From Josh Verlin's site:

Short summary of Ryan's 20 point performance in victory over Episcopal.

Story about victory over Chester. Ryan scored 17 (not 19 as the story erroneously reports).

Ryan and his parents were at the Palestra for the Binghamton game.
