I just learned today that Tom, who has been such a vibrant part of Harvard Basketball's resurgence, has passed away.
He was a kind man who combined the attributes of being a giver/philanthropist, with achieving remarkable business success.

Very sad loss for the Stemberg family and the Harvard basketball family. He was a great friend to the program.

Long ago in my grad school days I lived in Brighton and made frequent use of the Staples there. Had no idea that it was the first store!!

Thanks for sharing that, PN. I like that Tom came up with the idea for Staples this way, according to the Boston Globe:
"He came up with the idea for Staples while driving around in search of a printer ribbon on a Sunday afternoon during the Fourth of July weekend in 1985. He had just been fired as an executive at a supermarket company and needed the ribbon to finish a proposal for a new business. Most stores were closed and his struggle to find the right ribbon led him to an industry changing concept: the office superstore, a one-stop shop for business supplies."
