...other than a color? We've discussed Cantabs. That was ruled out. Surely over the past 150 years of competition with the Yale BULLDOGS and the Princeton TIGERS, Harvard could have come up with something better than a color that resembles red plus a coffee stain. Couldn't they be the PILGRIMS? PURITANS? BRAHMINS? WITCH BURNERS? CHOWDER EATERS?
Hey, Cantabs! How about some ideas?

Have you not seen our angry pilgrim who marches around the sidelines? That's John Harvard.

Does Harvard have a mascot ... 11-01-15 05:30 PM - Post#194145

John Harvard was a Puritan, not a Pilgrim.
The Pilgrims were in Plymouth Colony; the Puritans were in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, with its principal towns being Salem and Boston.
There was an early attempt to establish a college at Salem, led by the Rev. Hugh Peter (or Peters), who was then minister of the First Church in Salem. However, the vote in the General Court was for Boston. If Salem had won, Harvard might be known today as Peter University.
Peter was a great ally of Cromwell. With the Restoration, Peter was tried and executed in the gory manner of the day. As Peter was first emasculated, the other seven of the Ancient Eight might have had a merry time, taunting the eunuchs of Peter University.

Yes--that post was partially tongue in cheek. The pilgrim/puritan/John Harvard looking thing was created (or at least one version of it was) when I was in school in the late 90s. Lots of historical discussion on the Pilgrim-Puritan distinction, but the "angry pilgrim" moniker stuck (at least for that year or two). I have no idea if the costume is still used.

We had a John Harvard Pilgrim/Puritan type mascot in the mid-to-late-70's, so he's been around for a long time. That was back when the cheerleaders all wore white slacks & shirts, and had no pom poms, and their "uniforms" made them all look like guys...

Dartmouth has Kleggy, perhaps Harvard could be a Claret or an Aperitif.

Is "Kleggy" what you call "Keggy" after chugging a kegful?
