What does Mitch do to keep Columbia from taking Caruso, Weisz and Cook out of the offense the second time around? Also, Columbia may have a little better fortune with their own shots falling this time. We can't rely on Cannaday to save our bacon again.

Weisz and Cook missed a bunch of open shots; Caruso had Cohen dogging him. Bell needs to be more aggressive driving into Columbia's defense. The other thing I'd like to see is more three-man basketball with screens set for cutters on either straight dives or give-and-gos. Maybe see Caruso and Miller set some cross screens for each other to create a mismatch. And hit the offensive boards, because Princeton has the edge there.

The more Cannady, the better. Let him use his speed and score-from-anywhere ability to collapse the defense and find the open man. I also agree with Bell driving to the rim more. He can draw fouls and get to the line when nothing else is working.
Columbia knows our sets as well as we do -- can't run the usual methodical offense. Give Cannady and Bell room to create off basic pick-and-rolls and in transition.

I agree with SRP on this point. Weisz, Caruso and Cook missed a ton of shots they had been making as recently as the night before in Ithaca. Classic pick your poison scenario, as Miller feasted on the glass. I do not believe all three of those players will be ineffective again, especially at home. Cohen is a marvelous defender, but the price for shutting someone down is excessive personal fouls. It could happen again.

To a large extent, Weisz, Cook and Caruso fall into the "guardable guys, so you guard them category." That meant no helping the post on Miller. Cannady and Bell create the mismatches that can get the other guys open.

Very true.
I would think Columbia would use exactly the same defensive strategy, but on offense go at Miller early and often to get him to the bench with fouls.

Coach Earl discussed the upcoming Columbia game at Jadwin after the Yale game. He thought that it was highly unlikely that Caruso, Weisz and Cook would have a repeat performance at Jadwin (4-24 FG shooting). He mentioned that the three of them and the other Tiger players are pretty confident when shooting at Jadwin. He described the win at Columbia as miraculous considering their offensive performance but he clearly does not anticipate a reoccurrence.
Caruso can get points on his own if need be.

I agree that Caruso can get points on his own, but he needs space for that 3-point set shot of his, even though he leans away as he shoots it. So in that sense he is "guardable".
His moves in the lane are strong and efficient one on one, but he is vulnerable to quick hands from help defenders.

After having the opportunity to watch the replay from several weeks ago, I was even more amazed as to how poorly the Tigers played in the first half. They scored only 10 points over the first 12 minutes. Their shooting was horrendous even with some open shots and the turnovers were brutal. Remarkably they were only 4 points behind at half time even though they were down 31-20 with 2 minutes to go in the half. The Tigers could have easily been losing by at least 15 points as Columbia did not play a great first half but certainly better than Princeton. Cohen played very good defense on Caruso throughout the game and if it was not for the terrible defense by Petrasek on Miller, the Tigers may have been totally out of it. Additionally, the Tigers did a poor job in switching on defense and gave some easy baskets in the 1st half.
Different story to some extent in the 2nd half but they really played much better when they were desperate with several minutes to go.
Columbia will be playing desperate on Friday night and Rosenberg/Mullins had some success going to the hoop one on one. Rosenberg is a bad match up for Princeton.
I cannot imagine that the Tigers will play a similar first half at Jadwin but you never know. If they play like they did against Yale last weekend, they should be ok although Columbia seniors will do everything in their power to win.

It will be interesting to see if we get a bigger dose of Coby instead of Petrasek to shore up their interior defense. I also like Cook to have a better offensive game against Rosenberg than he did last time. If he can hit some threes and drag Rosenberg a step or two outside he should be able to blow by him on the dribble.

It would be nice to have Brase to "bang" with Rosenberg as Weisz got into foul trouble trying to fend off Rosenberg --- same goes true with Sherrod if the Tigers get into a playoff.
If Brase comes back healthy next year and Miller continues to get stronger and better, the Tigers will compete against large non-conference teams. If Brennan develops, the Tigers will be even better positioned to fend off top 50 teams. With everyone back, the challenge may be dividing up playing time and keeping everyone happy.
It would be helpful for next year if the Tigers play post-season this year as part of the growing process. Last Friday's win was an important first step but the Tigers still tough hurdles to jump over. Yale learned the hard way last year as to trying to get to the finish line.

Not that this is a desired outcome -- but I think that Princeton will go postseason in some tournament even if we fail to make the big one. We will have an opportunity to see one or more strong teams.

I agree. It seemed like Davis, Maddox, Mavraides et al improved dramatically after our deep CBI run in 2010.

It would take a pretty disastrous chain of events from here to end up in anything less than the NIT.

I'm not worried about next year. I thought this team had an outside shot last year and should have been favored to win it this year. Lots of things can happen to players--look at Montague for Yale--so the assumption that next year's team will be as good as this year's (plus Brase and any freshmen) is too facile.
The time to strike is now. The target is within this team's sights.

According to an interview cited on the Columbia page, Smith plans to start both Petrasek and Coby to form a big lineup. (Presumably Cohen comes off the bench.)
Since Coby and Miller will probably match up on each other, there are some interesting possibilities on both ends of the floor for Petrasek. Will he and Caruso match up? I like that for PU's offense. Could go either way on defense, but I have confidence in Caruso's strength.

So Columbia almost beats us, and their coach decides to change his lineup. Must say, I like it. For us.
