From HoopDirt 4/11/2016:

Columbia: NJIT assistant coach Jesse Agel will be returning to the Ivy league as he joins Jim Engles at Columbia. Agel is the former head coach at Brown, and was a long-time assistant to Tom Brennan at Vermont.

Report says Jared Czech has been hired as director of ops which I think he was at NJIT, I think.

Jean Bain from Dartmouth joined the staff. Great pick up by Columbia.

Jean Bain has been highly successful as a player, recruiter and coach. While Kyle recruited well at Columbia he did not snare any three and four-star recruits and relied instead on many under the radar guys. Those days are over, in my opinion, as Columbia must and will compete with the likes of Harvard's incoming class. I suspect that it won't be long before Jean Bain helps Jim Engles welcome some three and four-star USA recruits to Columbia.

Dartmouth fires Cormier, and we benefit from the collateral damage.

It will be interesting to follow the recruiting success of the new coaching staff. The staff in the two years prior to the arrival of Mullins, Lo and Cohen included Koby Altman and Carlin Hartman who were both intrepid recruiters. Carlin BTW just left Rice for Oklahoma.

With Agel and Bain on board, how many more assistant coaches will we be hiring?

I think the Ivies only permit two paid assistants.

As has been reported, Jesse Agel and Jean Bain will be assistants to Coach Engles.

In his interview for Ivy Hoops Online Coach Engles said he was bringing on Jared Czeck for the "unpaid" position which as noted by others is the last assistant spot in the Ivies. Czeck was Director of Basketall Operations (DOBO) at NJIT and seems plugged into important recruiting sources. Here is some info on Czeck:

The remaining issue is who will be the new DOBO. I assume Jonathan Safir who has been the graduate manager has a shot but am not certain.

Is Engles going to have both Czeck and Safir? While Smith's other assistants have vanished, Safir is still listed on the website.

It is possible to have them both. Czeck as an assistant coach and Safir as DOBO.

But aren't Agel, Bain, Czeck, and Safir four coaches when if Chet is right, the limit is two?

Here is the 2014-15 coaching staff:

Kyle Smith Head Coach
Derrick Phelps Assistant Coach
Kevin Hovde Assistant Coach
Adam Hood Assistant Coach
John Andrzejek Director of Basketball Operations
Jake Heine Graduate Manager

What I am suggesting is that for 2016-17 it will be:

Jim Engles Head Coach
Jesse Agel Assistant Coach
Jean Bain Assistant Coach
Jared Czech Assistant Coach
Jon Safir DOBO
TBS Graduate Manager

The structure could indeed be:

1) Head Coach
2) Paid Assistant
3) Paid Assistant
4) Unpaid Assistant
5) Dir BBall Ops
6) Grad Manager/Undergrad Managers/etc.

Mr. James, do you have any clue why the Ivy's third assistant is an unpaid position??? That's just shameful.

- It sounds like Columbia assistant Jared Czech could joining Joe Scott’s new staff at Air Force. Czech has been at Columbia since 2016, and has also been an assistant at NJIT. He was a GA for Scott at Denver in 2013-14. -

That post also had this tidbit (which is also noted on the Harvard board)

- I’m adding a few names to my original LIST at Wake Forest from Saturday. It now sounds like Harvard’s Tommy Amaker and Northwestern’s Chris Collins are in play here. I’ve also heard that some guys on my original list have already spoken to Wake: Wes Miller (UNCG), Ryan Odom (UMBC), and Steve Forbes (ETSU). This one is moving quickly. -
