Paul Newman, 6'9 big body role player out of Roman Catholic (PA), a top team with lots of D1 talent in one of the top leagues in the East. Had a competing offer from Delaware State. He will apparently join In 2017 so I assume he will be prepping for a year.

The City of Basketball Love web site has a profile of him in its 2016 recruits section. Projects him as a low Div 1 or high 2; but says if he continues to work on his conditioning & his game he might have a significant upside.

I think he's big and raw, but apparently is big on the boards and defensively. Then again he's playing with 3 D1 kids (all going to Penn State) and a few behind him.

An article in GoLocalProv says Newman will be joining David Erebor in the class of 2017. I was anxious to see Erebor team with Travis Fuller to give the 2016-2017 team two young 6-9 athletes to go with 6-7 230 pound seasoned athlete Blake Wilkerson. Does anyone know if Erebor will join the team this fall?

That's what CoBL seems to be saying as well. Can always use size or hope for late development in a big.

I think Erebor will play at Brown year and Newman will prep at St. Andrews, in RI and play at Brown next year. St. Andrews has a number of alums in D1 and in the NBA.

Very familiar with St. Andrews. Bonzie Colsen, who's doing quite well at Notre Dame, played there. Carter-Williams was a recent high profile grad. Being next door in Barrington I'll be sure to stop by a few times to see Newman.

I hope Erebor can contribute some quality minutes off the bench next year to support a starting five of Blackmon, Speith, Okolie, Wilkinson, and Fuller. Brandon Anderson and Josh Howard both played key roles on championship teams this year? They will push returning upper classman Hobbie, Triplett, Daugherty, and Aram Martin.

Coach Martin still needs a 6-5 shooting guard who can fill it and a 6-10 wide body in the paint. What team doesn't? But the program has an improved overall skill level. Just wish we had Cedric for one more year.

Brown might have gotten that 6-10 wide body you were hoping for.

Nothing on Verbal Commits or any other recruiting site, so not 100% on it. Listed as 6-10 or 6-11 depending on the site, 250 pounds.

Well, you can't teach size. He seems to have the ability to shoot with either hand around the basket. Some bigs never develop that skill. A different dimension added to a young front court with good potential. I don't recall the Bears having a player his size since Stark Langs in the mid-80's.

Martin has certainly been very active. I wonder if this an immediate impact from the endowed coaching chair. Does anyone know exactly what endowing the coaching position means and what it may allow the Bears to do now that they couldn't prior?

I suspect the endowment will help the BB budget, but whether it will level any playing fields is another question. I'm hearing Charnov's dad is an Alum. I don't think he will have Aram Martin to push around.

This article may lend some credence to the big kid committing to Brown.

I love your enthusiasm. I'd like to see him plating in the fall, before we are ready to predict how soon he will contribute.

Thanks OB. Beyond this young man who will provide some size and potential to the team, I am equally enthused about the talent Coach Martin is bringing into the program. With Cedric graduating we needed to improve the front court and this young man, Erebor, Wilkinson and Josh Howard certainly will. It won't happen over night. But for a program long lacking for size and athleticism, I have reason to be optimistic on a Tuesday night in May and look forward to open practices in October.

Agreed, JB, but Triplet and Okolie have already added athleticism, IMHO.

That's right. Which is why I'm glad it didn't end there. I recall Mike was referred to as a good recruiter at Penn, where they had tradition and the Pelestra. Now he's building a program from ground up. His first recruiting class are seniors this year. So the trend line started then and continues to improve.
