A plus for Cornell, a minus for Tigertown. What could be better than that?

Can't wait to see Henderson play against Earl. Have always loved good cat fights.

I've been dreading this news. Earl certainly deserves a head coaching shot but it hurts to lose him to another Ivy. He will make a difference for Cornell's talented but undisciplined guards. The New York trip just got harder.

I could not agree more.
AND if Princeton has a good year this year, leading to Henderson leaving for a higher paying job like Sydney Johnson, where are we then for a replacement?

You would think that Earl had a conversation with the Princeton AD and Henderson to get a sense if Henderson was thinking about leaving and if he would get the Tigers job if Mitch went. It may actually be a good sign that Henderson plans to stay which is surprising. I know that Tiger players were disappointed when Earl did not get the job after Johnson left and there was an adjustment period to Henderson' style.
It will hurt with Earl not on the bench this year but if, big if, he comes back to Princeton after Henderson leaves, it would be a good training ground. Ex-Tigers always seem to drift back to Princeton.

Yeah, I mean, maybe Cornell got a similar buyout into Earl's contract like Kyle had at Columbia, but probably not. I would bet that if Mitch leaves, this makes it even more likely that Earl would get the role now that he has head coaching experience. Could have also worked if he had gone to a Power 5 school to be an associate head coach or something similar.

I disagree. While he was at Princeton he was waiting his turn. Now that he is gone it just puts him in the mix with guys like Bill Carmody and Mike Brennan, if they want the job.

I mean, how is Earl not more likely to get it than now? Let's assume that they want it in both cases, how is Earl better positioned:
1) As a long time Princeton assistant
2) As a long time Princeton assistant PLUS head coaching experience
The only way he'd be better off staying at Princeton is if A) those guys would be scared off going up against an internal candidate or B) if Mitch somehow left mid-season and Earl could prove his mettle as an interim hire. Neither of those seems very likely. It seems most likely that Princeton would do an actual search to replace Mitch, and I don't see how adding head coaching experience wouldn't improve Earl's odds in such a search.

Only caveat is that moving in conference from one head job to another can be a little dicey. I definitely think that adding head coaching experience will help Earl, but I can see Princeton having some reservations about hiring the head coach of another school in the conference. Similarly, I can see Earl having some reservations, too. Obviously his ties to Princeton are very deep and that might trump everything, but I think as alums and fans we sometimes overestimate how much these things may matter to potential coaches. If Earl ultimately has an eye for something bigger, success at Cornell could enable him to move to a higher level conference (of course, the number of higher level conferences has been shrinking!) and skip the Princeton step, which would be a move up, but still within the same pool.

I would guess that Earle told Cornell that he would stay for a few years.

West Philly you are way off base. Earl is a rock star at Princeton and he's played a key role in Princetons move to more tempo. Carmody is not an alum and as much as I like Mike Brennan, he's from a distant era and a subpar league. If MH leaves, and my sense is that he'll be a Tiger for quite a few years to come, Brian Earl would be the top pick by a landslide.

This is a tragedy. I gladly would have fired MH to retain Earl.
If MH delivers a title or two, then he'll be likely to leave. And if he fails, then we're stuck with a lameduck coach and no obvious successor. I hope there's a Plan B here.
This is amazing news for a Cornell program in shambles. I absolutely expect Earl to steal at least one game from us in the next 2 seasons, probably ruining our title hopes.

I'm glad Brian Earl stayed as long as he did. I like him, but there is a reason the backup quarterback is the most popular - we just don't know. Joe Scott was supposed to be great.
As for Henderson leaving after winning a couple of titles, well then we won a couple of titles. Who knows who would be available? Sydney? Craig Robinson?
Carril's last win against UCLA has quite the legacy. Carmody, Thompson, Johnson, Henderson, and now Earl. If Scott didn't get canned it would be all the assistants and the backcourt as D1 Head coaches.

There must have been some interesting discussions prior to this decision. I was very curious when Earl was named "Associate Head Coach" about three weeks ago, which probably came with a raise in salary. That must have been an attempt to keep him around, which we now see didn't work.
So, maybe he is now starting on the path blazed by Steve Donahue, when he left Penn to go to Cornell. Except, hope the reason Earl comes back to Princeton isn't similar to the reason SD came back to Penn.

I thought of the same analogy to backup QBs. I do expect Earl to be a good coach.
One of my minor regrets is that I didn't get to watch many of the games he played because it was pre-Internet feeds and there weren't a lot of opportunities to see them on TV. When I did watch him play, though, he was really, really good in all aspects of the game. And he was the designated creator late in the shot clock when the offense hadn't generated an open opportunity.
