Phew!

This is good news...

Thanks, PennFan10.

A new chapter begins... Time to rally around our new guy, who really seems like a good get.

McLaughlin seems like a really good egg.

Saw a brief part of press conference and he has a beautiful young family... Like Mike Martin.

I'm hoping he can impact the program as well as Cormier has and that he will stay for at least 5 years.

I think with the new Ivy tourney, though, there will be more turnover in the coaching ranks.

Even the most poorly positioned Ivy programs will ax coaches who don't make the top 4 after 3-5 years.

I imagine McLaughlin will feel some serious heat if he doesn't make the tourney in any of the next 3 years with Boudreaux and co.

I really hope he is successful for his sake and for all of us who care about the program.

Go Green!

H. old boy, IMHO the Ivy Presidents hope for an 8 way tie in all sports. I think Ivy coaches have more job security than those who are more financially motivated.

Some, but the Cormier firing suggests that is changing. It's only one data point, but that seems like more of a big conference type of firing. The conference tournament could work against coaches who don't get there. For a long time, we've had a league that tends to be dominated by a couple of teams, and it has been easy to have the attitude that certain teams can't compete for the title. Going forward, there will likely be less of that.

I agree. A tournament that only includes four teams automatically creates a new metric for success and failure. Now we have de facto first and second divisions in the conference. If the presidents (in their extraordinary, far-seeing wisdom) had decided on a tournament that included all eight teams, that wouldn't be the case. But there you have it. I bet we're going to see more heads roll in the future. Be careful what you wish for and all that.

Ivy's do seem disinclined to fire coaches in all sports. They tend to wait for contracts to expire most of the time.

Cormier had another year on his contract. Had not expired. But the team will win 15+ next year so this was the only window Sheehy would have.

Sheehy is moving lots of coaches along. My hope is that he's setting coaches up for success and supporting them before brandishing the ax. The cynical view of his moves is that he is not supporting coaches/programs that are teetering so that he can replace them and put his "stamp" on things.

I think the jury is still out how successful he has been in improving winning through coaching changes. Hasn't yet worked in women's hoops or men's lax. Got a good volleyball coach who raised the bar quickly, but who promptly left for greener pastures (no pun intended).

I'm surprised how openly he discusses personnel changes and his approach to firing. Makes him seem "green" IMO (again no pun intended).

Sheehy seems very... let's say "confident" in his coaching moves, etc. He'll probably be retiring himself before we really see how effective all his coaching and other moves have been. After all, I believe he's well into his 60s. He must be a talented guy, and I hope the work he's doing is building infrastructure for continued success for Big Green athletics, but I'm not so sure yet.

Joseph Asch whose blog I read about Dartmouth is critical about most things happening at Dartmouth (including presidential decisions) but seems to praise Sheehy.

I also get a sense Sheehy has a chip on his shoulder because he himself never got a D1 hoops coaching job. He succeeded to the extent possible at the D3 level, but there are at least 2 occasions I've learned of (in the Ivy alone) when he went for a D1 job but didn't get it.

Your description calls to mind the last years of Steve Bilsky.

Just saying.

Pete Hutchins is the head coach at New Hampton Prep, he was the head coach for Mike Auger and Max Rothschild at Penn. He also coached Tyler Lydon at Syracuse. Seems like a good get for Dartmouth.

These all seem like good gets individually, but the whole is extremely light on Division I coaching experience and has no Ivy experience that I am aware of (other than Trotter playing). Also seems long on operations guys and short on coaching experience overall.

I guess I'm surprised by the direction with an immediate window to build a team with Boudreaux and Wright. Seems like a coaching group that could take some time to find its footing.

That said, with a young group, it's also possible that you catch lightening in a bottle. Should be interesting, at least.

"I believe he's well into his 60s"

Sheehy was Williams Class of '75, which suggests he's 62 or 63.

Franklin & House interview with Dartmouth Coach McLaughlin

I managed to get my hands on a so so recording of the interview Coach Mclaughlin did with ESPN 94.5 Franklin & House show. There are a couple of dead air moments but it's worth listening to if you have the time and are so inclined.
