Seems like a perfect schedule to me. Miami on December 28th is a dandy and we will be playing St. Joseph's and Seton Hall as well. The precon is nicely constructed and, of course, we finally have a post-season Ivy League Tournament at year-end. Incidentally, Luke and Nate are a solid broadcasting duo. I hope we see lots more of them. Congrats to the persons who put together this schedule and presentation. Well Done!

When does practice start? Any prognostications on the starting five and second unit?

Usually, it starts in early October, though I think they have been scrimmaging without coaches pretty regularly since summer. News about progress and lineups, however, has been scarce.

My guess is that Coach Engles will start the season with a line-up of Petrasek, Meisner, Coby, Castlin and Davis. If Hunter is healthy, he could be a starter. Hickman and the freshman point guard, Mike Smith, are likely to see significant playing time. McComber, Voss and Eberle will be role players up front. Tape seems to have the physical tools to be an impact player for the Lions. Top to bottom almost everyone on the roster has a chance to be in the rotation given that there is a new coaching staff.

I doubt that Engles will play Petrasek/Meisner/Coby together for significant stretches (or start all 3). In general, I don't think any of them will guard the perimeter sufficiently for that, nor do I think they handle as well as you would like to play the 3 position. Playing those 3 with Castlin puts a lot of handling pressure on Davis (or Smith, Jackson, etc.).
So my guess is that somebody else starts on the perimeter (I said Petrasek/Meisner/Castlin/ Hickman/Davis on the Dartmouth site). But as you state, it really could be anybody -- I think this is a wide open battle with only Petrasek a sure thing.
Engles always played very small at NJIT, for what it's worth. That may have been driven by personnel rather than a choice. Regardless, I think Petrasek/Meisner/Coby would be an unusually large lineup in today's league, and would struggle mightily to guard an opposing perimeter player.

The front court player who intrigues me the most right now is Meisner. He seemed to have all of the physical tools and athleticism when I saw him last year but as I recall committed too many fouls. I will be curious to see what he gained from playing ball in Europe this summer.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Mike Smith in the starting lineup at some point this year.

Yes, it would not be a surprise if Mike Smith becomes the starting point guard this season, but the competition is fierce--Davis, Hickman and Adlesh. I also agree that Engles might opt to start a small forward such as Castlin or Hunter with Petrasek and either Coby or Meisner. If Coby plays like he did in the CIT Championship Game against UC-Irvine, it's hard to see him coming off the bench. Same, of course with Petrasek and Meisner. All three of them played brilliantly in the CIT against tough competition.

Unlike last year, in which we had three and sometimes four guys playing 32-34 minutes a game, I expect to see only Petrasek with 30 minutes a game and no other starter with more than 24-26 minutes a game. I expect to see us go 9 or 10 deep every game. I do not see Hickman as a PG but as a SG. Smith should see a lot of minutes but he will not match up well against PGs who are over 6'. Of course this is complete speculation since there has been a real absence of the usual intel and we don't know haw Engles assesses our personnel.

2016/2017 Schedule 09-15-16 12:20 PM - Post#210472
In response to Columbia 37P6
Davis will have to improve significantly to keep Smith or Adlesh from taking the PG job. For someone who was widely touted, he really faltered in the second half of the season.
The intriguing thing about this team is that they have so many players who could take a step up. Of course, there is Meisner, but there are also a whole series of other questions: Will Castlin return to his first year form? Can Hunter realize his potential as the "most underrated guard in Florida? Is Killingsworth a taller version of a glue player like Isaac Cohen? How quickly can Tape transition to college and become a defensive force? And though I have never been a big fan. I have even heard rumors that defensively at least, things have begun to come together for Voss.
One question we haven't addressed is which guard is going defend against the likes of Mason and Morgan. We don't seem to have a defensive stopper,
but are going to need one against the best guards in the league.
FWIW, I remain pretty optimistic about the season. The probabilities are that with enough players who might take a step up, several will. So, though we'll probably be ranked 175ish at the beginning of the season, I suspect we'll drift upward and end up between 125 and 150. Although I know there are several other plausible claimants, let's hope that's enough for 4th place in the IL.

If we don't have a stopper on the defensive side does Engles play more zone?

In regard to Davis, I think there is a freshman wall that some kids smack up against. Even though Davis didn't play huge minutes, I think the rigors of the college game (along with everything else going on) wears some kids down the first year. Could be what happened to Davis.
I do think, as I said in another post, that asking a new PG to play with Petrasek/Meisner/Coby/Cas tlin as a unit will be a tall order. I assume Engles will want to have a unit that handles better than that nearly all the time. Particularly if Columbia is going to play fast, which seems to be the assumption. Engles' NJIT teams were almost exclusively small, and played fast.

Yes -- no knock on Coby or Meisner intended in my argument for only 2 bigs. There's probably room for all 3 guys (adding in Petrasek) to play 25 a night even in my 2 big scenario, though that doesn't leave much time for McComber, Voss, and Tape. Good problem to have.

The success of last year's team (25-10 record and CIT title) was primarily due to the outstanding player of the senior class. More than that, everything the Lions did was geared to accentuating the positives of the senior players. However, Davis and the other freshmen certainly must have felt some pressure coming into a senior-oriented environment and I think that at least Davis and Meisner did well enough under the circumstances. However, I suspect that now that they have moved up in rank last year's freshmen group will play much better this year. Also, in a similar vein, I feel there are more opportunities for this year's freshman group to see meaningful playing time early in the season.

The senior class was great offensively, but they weren't great defenders. This year's team will be better defensively. There are alot of great pieces on this team, too.

If practice begins in 10 days, let's hope that soon after, word begins to trickle out about exactly what we have....
