collegecourtreport.com predicts that Kyle Castlin will become a household name if he can improve his outside shooting. I would attach the link but that is beyond my technical competence.

There are rumors that Castlin will be getting surgery in the next week and may miss the season.

Not good to hear but far too common in Ivy circles - seems like we always lose a few key players for the season around this time.
The impact will be felt but might have been larger if Castlin had played the role last year that it seemed he would after such a strong frosh season. I don't think this is enough to push Columbia down to even with Penn and the other teams previously fighting for fifth, but it doesn't help, if true.

That stinks, if true. Will he go the Rosenberg route, sit out, and play 2 more years at Columbia? Or the Mullins route, graduate on time, and play 1 year at Columbia and 1 year elsewhere as a grad student?

True or not there are guys that can fill those needs. This team has alot of great pieces.

There absolutely are a lot of great pieces. Losing one guy would hurt Penn's chances a lot more, for example.
However, given the number of efficient minutes lost for Columbia, there are a lot of unknowns. My confidence in the likelihood that Columbia is still a solid team that can finish in the playoff is premised on the fact that there are a lot of folks who were efficient in limited roles last year and could step forward. Losing one of those pieces decreases the likelihood. And I think losing the piece at wing is particularly troubling, because a lot of the pieces are either bigs or smaller guards. Castlin seems to me to fill a need at a spot where there are fewer choices.
There were rumors of a major Columbia injury a couple of months back. Is this it? Hopefully there isn't something else lurking out there.

I think we have a lot of depth at the combo 2/3. Hickman, Hunter, Killingsworth, etc. come to mind. I am sure I am forgetting a few guys but this is the area where there was going to be the most competition for minutes.

Yes, but there are probably 2 spots to be filled by those guys. Castlin and Hickman were the only ones coming in with experience. So when I look at those spots, Columbia will now have to count on somebody who is an unproven commodity to play. Sometimes, those work out. Sometimes they don't. I think the odds are lower than they are for a 100+ ORAT guy (albeit in a supporting role) like Castlin and Hickman. So taking one of those guys out just makes it more necessary that Hunter and Killingsworth are ready to go from the start, instead of only needing them to play if they warrant/earn it. From my largely statistical viewpoint, it's just less of a chance than you had with Castlin. That doesn't mean Killingsworth and Hunter won't be good. Just that I'm less confident without Castlin.

It does thin out the options a bit, but I still think we'll be okay.
Does anyone know the nature of Castlin's injury? Is it something he can, with confidence, come back from next year?

Bad break for Castlin if true. I appreciated his game in the limited amount I got to see him play.

Any update on whether Castlin will be playing? Perhaps we will hear something at the dinner on the 4th.

So who is best equipped to play the same combo SG/SF role on the court? Hickman is the obvious choice, but I want to see what Rodney is capable of doing. And what about Barba or Killingsworth?
